win 8/ 64 bit:
been reading about requirement for ''product key''.. i do not have Win. 8 'pro'' ...but reading on these boards of people being asked for 'product key' - OEM - in order to complete the update to 8.1..... or is that requirement only for those trying to update to 8.1 ''pro' version? thanks in advance - Edythe

SORRY tried to understand it all and i'm too confused .... i saw the 'steps' but still don't know if i'll have to have use my OEM key ... the retail store did my install and set up.... that's all i know... i have win. 8 (NOT PRO) I know that much - so if i go to Store and have it do the install when it's finished and before i can use the computer again will i need to enter the product key ? i don't want to do the entire download only to find out at the end in order to 'finish' the install i will need that key.

Chances are you will use "Windows 8.1" setup media > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help
or "Windows 10" setup media > https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench

Unless you have a Windows * PRO Product Key...

ShowKeyPlus in my sig below will retrieve the product key from the OS and Bios..
Click Save and it will create a text file with the key information...

OK FOUND it - thanks so much - but still ....will i have to type-in the 'key' to finish the installation of 8.1 ? or is it on a case by case situation ? (and thus, better to have in 'just in case?)... thanks again

No the Key will not be needed for Driver Pack..
The key is in the backup windows OS on the USB - But would have to restore the backup to the PC, to get it..

i confused you - i meant - would the key be 'showing' if i loaded the Driver Pack so i could write it down ...and with the USB i made you are saying the 'key' would only be visible only if i use the USB to do a 'restore' .... ok i'll just have to hope the 8.1 update won't require the product key to finish the installation and for 'sign-in' - not looking forward to all of this !
if for any reason i can't finish installing 8.1 what steps to get back to 8.1 ? thanks

FOR what 'that' would cost i might as well just get a new PC with 8.1 installed - my PC is a good 3=-4 yrs old anyway...
what i don't understand is that 8.1 is allegedly an 'update' to Win 8 (not an 'upgrade' program) so why are so many having post-install problems after the download of 8.1? ..Also, i frequently get a banner across my screen showing 'download now' and keep working while this is taking place '' which suprises me since if i kept using my computer my AV/firewall would remain active - wouldn't 'that' impede the process of the update ?- ... also it would have been installed automatically if i had my updates on 'auto' -update- i don't because i like to see 'what' is being offered & choose what i want installed) ;)
