8.1=prior to update should i do these steps:

    Lenovo PC - 64 bit/ Win 8

i have not done the 8.1 update 'yet (from 8) .and i'm not sure if i'm making too much out of a 'simple' update !! but read of failures, etc. So
Before doing the update to 8.1 here's what i plan to do:
have all Win updates current /empty recycle bin/run AV full scan/ run maleware full scan/turn off McAvee scanning (is it necessary to turn-off mcAfee firewall?)/ run disk cleanup/run defrag/restart computer /
BIG QUESTION: should i disconnect printer from PC tower/ WiFi (Cisco)used for tablet useage thruout house? ... my download speed is 15mg... is that 'fast enough' for the program... thanks so much for any input.

    Hello edythe,

It sounds like you are ready. There's no need to disconnect any hardware. I would always recommend to back up anything that you don't want to lose to be extra safe though.

YES i will do that and have most i need on 2 USB portable 'thingies' ! LOL ... one question ...so - i am showing as ''owner/local account administrator password protected (i use one when i first boot up)once download is done do i just sign-in as i usually do ? AND forgot -- should i turn off- firewall also ?
i may need a 'driver' update for my printer - how important is 'that' ...there was a test to see if i had everything ready to go - i am except for that one 'driver' - i hate doing anything to this machine - lol ... do you think i could just forego that driver-update?
ps: why do i read message boards showing people having problems with their downloading/installing/getting back on line after attempting to instal 8.1 ? many many thanks

I would recommend to temporarily uninstall or disable a 3rd party AV program to prevent it from possibly causing issues, but otherwise you should be good to go.

YES i know to disable the AV scanning but what about the ''firewall'' ? any idea why others write in about their unsuccessful downloads then having problems signing-in , and other situations they run into after the 8.1 download is finished ? am i ok with 15mg speed ?

If it's a 3rd party firewall program, then yes. No need to for Windows Firewall.

I can't comment on the other issues since those vary to much per system.

You should be fine with a 15mg speed. It just may take a bit longer to download.

    You're most welcome.

You don't need to upgrade your Internet bandwidth speed unless you just wanted to.

i just thought a 'faster' download time via increasing the bandwidth-speed would mean less time for 'things' to happen to the download during a 'slower' bandwidth-speed ....LOL ... and i don't have to be concerned about viruses, etc. without a firewall and AV not being ''active'' ? ??? thanks so much !

Nar, not during the upgrade. I would enabled the AV and firewall afterwards though.

I imagine this is a known issue: I use the desktop view more than the tile view. I set the desktop icon view to "small" and arrange them the way I like. somewhere in the next boot cycle or two, the view reverts to where it was before I tried to arrange it MY way. is there a cure? c
