hello edythe, :)

if you like, you could download a windows 8.1 iso file to create a windows 8.1 usb with, and use the usb to clean install windows 8.1 anytime you like. You would just enter your windows 8 key to activate.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

don't know how to find my 'key' !!! Any truth to 8.1 being pulled from windows 'store' ? Tried posting this -won't 'take' !!! (popup states i'm 3 characters short' ??)

Not sure if 8.1 will remain on the store until the actual date stated in the policy as it is still considered, by Microsoft, as Service Pack for windows 8

Windows 8.1 falls under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8, and will reach end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023. With the General Availability of Windows 8.1, customers on Windows 8 have 2 years, until January 12, 2016, to move to Windows 8.1 in order to remain supported.

Source

So it could be as soon as January 12, 2016 if the date of the Service pack expiry is used or as late as January 10, 2023 if the official end of life is used

this is the OP: Lenov PC, 64bit.. i have not done the 8.1 update 'yet (from 8) .and i'm not sure if i'm making too much out of a 'simple' update !! but read of failures, etc. Before doing the update to 8.1 i would make sure i have all Win updates/empty recycle bin/run av full scan plus maleware scan/turn off McAvee scanning (is it necessary to turn-off mcAfee firewall?)/ do a disk cleanup/defrag/restart computer / BIG QUESTION: should i disconnect printer from PC tower and also my WiFi used for tablet useage thruout house? ... my download speed is 15mg... is that 'fast enough' for the program... thanks so much for any input.
