Are these updates required to update to 8.1 ?

    Lenovo PC /Win 8 /64....

There is a few optionial updates (1) KB2976978...with no information listed...it's for an Intel Driver...also (2) 'graphics' updates' and a (3) RealTec update available.... how necessary or important are these in relation to updating from 8 to 8.1 ? would 'not' installing these updates affect the download/install/use of Win 8.1 thanks so much

    Hello Edythe,

Those would just be device driver updates, and not required for Windows 8.1. It would be good to install them when you like to keep those drivers updated though.

alright ...thanks for your help. Wondering: i get the banner-notice across my screen occasionally from Windows to click & update to 8.1....does that mean that Microsoft has 'determined' (if that's the right assumption/wording) that my computer can accept 8.1 and has a ''pre-requisits'' required ? thanks so much

    Hmmm.

KB2976978 is on my hit list of updates to avoid as it is W10 related.

Thanks so much for the below - yes i realized KB2976978 is '10-related but will ck the list below to make sure i don't have them also...i am not on auto- install for updates and read what each offered update is related to - when i see anything about '10, i just ''hide' it. Regarding the 'reminder-banner' i get across my screen to click & update to 8.1....does that banner indicate that somehow Windows/Microsoft has determined my computer can safely accept 8.1 ? thanks again for you help ! Edythe

Pleased it is of some use.

I have Windows Update set to notify only and what I did was install in monthly blocks. When I got to 2015 I dialled all the KB numbers up and looked at what each did, avoiding the W10/data gatherer/compatibility stuff. Doing that has given me a super clean install with no failed updates and no (hopefully) W10 stuff.

W8.1 banner... I jumped straight into W8.1 and so I never had to go through the W8>8.1 update. I believe that upgrading 8 to 8.1 should be fine (and is definitely recommended by most). In fact 8.1 has been called unofficially just a service pack update for 8.
