Are these updates required to update to 8.1 ?

    It's just a personal choice. Some people want it, and some don't want the icon nagging them about it.

    Personally, I would recommend to use it to get Windows 10 for free while you can.

    ok i agree - i don't mind being 'nagged' ....so my time-frame if i'm correct is to update to 8.1 before January ?, 2016 and 'reserve' Win. 10 by July, 2016...(course i won't wait for last minute for either) ..am i correct ? thanks so much

    OK -SO noted - was i correct about the January '16 deadline to update to 8.1 from 8 in order to qualify for the '10 free edition?

    OK JUST went to the site you included .... only thing i need to know is 'must' i update to 8.1 by January '16 or can i hold-off doing the 8.1 update until after January, 2016 but just make sure to update to Win. 8.1 plus Win 10 before end of July '16. Reason i ask i thought i saw -don't recall where - that the 8.1 update from 8 has to be done by January '16... thanks agan
