    Windows Update issues.

Finally get a day off, spending it trying to get Windows 8.1 to update and eventually upgrade to Windows 10. The laptop I'm working on is a Toshiba Satellite C55D-A5372D. Can't quite figure it out, but every attempt to update Win 8.1 hangs up. A view of installed updates shows a list of failed update attempts going back at least a month. So Windows own auto update hasn't been working. This reminds me of when you use to go onto MS's website and select patches individually, install, reboot then repeat again untill all critical, recommended and optional updates were installed.

The only thing I can think of that might interfere with updating or even upgrading is either Windows Defender, AVG (free version from Cnet) is/was blocking what I was trying to do. I even tried upgrading to Windows 10, but even that failed to work. Suggestions?

    Hello Jaxxxom,

Since your end goal is to update to Windows 10, you might see if you may be able to directly clean install Windows 10 instead using the method in the tutorial below.

Actually my goal is to repair Windows 8.1, IMHO, I didn't care much for Windows 10 during the short time I used it. Of course that could be a matter of just getting use to a new OS. As for right now I'd just like to get Windows 8.1 on running more smoothly. Specific issue I'm having outside not being able to do updates and patches, is IE constantly freezing while viewing Facebook pages.

Usually I've been working 6-7 days a week. Because of an illness and my next schedule, I was off yesterday, today and tomorrow (Monday) as well. During this free time I've been doing a bit of digging into matters myself. Ran MS Update repair tool. Fixed everything but Bits Service. Tried running repair tool on that....still no go. The Windows Update error message is 2147942402. With a link to NetHELPmsg 3547. Some of this is getting beyond even what I learned in my A+ class back in 2003. Not sure what to do now, have 49 critical updates stacked up and 3 optional ones as well.

Have you already uninstalled AVG to see if it may work properly afterwards?

I turned AVG off. I wasn't going to uninstall as I've usually been too broke to buy any security software. Now that I'm working again, that was going to be one of my future posts. Right now, just trying to get windows...and IE to work properly including updates. Since my last post a little while ago, been doing some googling to see if I can find a solution on my own.

This is what I did find. For some odd reason Bits service can be accidently removed by anti virus software. And that's probably what happened to me. This website explains how to re-install and then activate Bits. Fix Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Missing from Services I followed the instructions to the letter. Then re-ran Windows Update Repair tool from Ms's website. Still a no go. Any attempt to download an update, even if only doing just one, it just sits there doing nothing for hours on end. About the only think I can think of at this time to do next is to run Windows repair from the recovery disks I made the day I brought the computer home. Unless someone has any better ideas???

If that doesn't work for you, then you might consider a clean install. Be sure to back up anything you don't want to lose first.

Ugh! I was afraid that was the next step! I just did a reinstall in mid August. What if I ran Windows repair?

Sidebar. While we're discussing re-installing my os, I was thinking about upgrading the hard drive next March once my warrantee expires. I really like the idea of going with a ssd drive I had seen while pricing out memory sticks. (Can't remember if it was Kingston or Crucial, but one makes a compatible ssd for my laptop.) Is it possible to pull JUST windows out of the restore disks without all the OEM added junk?

Went back to try fixing this again. I just noticed, I somehow managed to install 2 updates. There's now only 47 listed. I'm wondering, in the many years I've owned computers I've seen installs and upgrades that didn't necessarily show progress in kb downloaded or so many percent installed. Has anyone have this happen with Windows?

Yeah, sometimes it doesn't show any progress until it's about finished.
