Windows 8.1 keeps downloading Windows 10 manual updates

Yup, everything was fine. So today when I do a Check for Updates. Windows 10 downloads to laptop and creates the usual folder $Windows.~BT

I reboot adnd it asks if I want to ACCEPT installtion f WIndows 10..I say DECLINE. ALso note, I never had WIn 10 on this 8.1laptop and never reserved a copy.

So I know that some updates were not installed and I reboot. I then do a CHECK FOR UPDATES again. Now Windows 10 starts being downloaded again and we all know it takews a while.

It asks if I want to ACCEPT and install it. I say no.

However there are the other updates I want to install. See attached. And I cannot install them...

So I read some threads and uninstalled a few KB's and then hid them. And rebooted.

Windows 10 comes down again... Another 45 minutes wasted.

So the questions (sorry) are:
1. How do I get Windows 10 to stop downloading?
2. TO stop asking me if I want to install it when I decline it
3. And how do I install the other updates?

Thanks so much
Peter

Thank you very much. Had to perform all steps from both links
The one thing I did but I think can restore is the GWX subdirectories in System32 and SYSWOW64 if I recall. Still in recycle bin.
**Do I need to restore??

After rebooting ans doing another Check for updates, I did not get the WIndows 10 nag screen nor did it try rto download the entire package again. GREAT!!

When I tried to install the updates (not Win 10 related), it sat at 0% for a long time and then finally kicked in.....
So I am seeing if this works when I reboot and if all updates took and if Win 10 nag screen and perpetual Win 10 download package ceases.

Will report in a second.........am rebooting

SEEMS PERFECTO

WOW YOU ARE GOOD as I research a lot!

Thanks!!

**PS: Should I restore the GWX directories or leave well enough alone????

Great news Peter. I'm glad it was able to help.

Yeah, you don't have to worry about the GWX directory or key.

One other item, can I delete the bloated Windows.~BT folder, Windows.~ws, in C: and elsewhere?

Should I run the disk cleanup file and get rid of temporary installation files or is this dangerous?

It would help lessen disk space used by my Acronis Backup.

Thanks so much once again to those that help people in these forums.
Have a great weekend.
Peter
