Ive been having issues with downloading and installing windows updates since the beginning of August but only realised this was the case recently. After looking for solutions on the internet myself but to no avail, I posted on another forum and someone there spent a couple of days trying to help me - you can read the suggestions and the results in this thread:

Can anyone suggest anything else?

I don't see any problem.
What error do you get when you try to update?

Can you access the thread (from another forum) in the link in my first post? All the details are there.

Dont believe this. Ive just tried to download and install again and it has worked today - this has not happened with windows files since the beginning of August although other downloads have been fine.

You can find a few times in that thread that you have performed the sfc /scannow.
But, whenever SFC says it can't fix problems you need to reboot the system in order for SFC to try to repair the problems and then try sfc/scannow again to see if the problems are fixed.
I guess you didn't reboot after each sfc /scannow?

Don't think I did but can't remember - I was just following instructions that I didn't understand.

I'm downloading Windows 10 now manually as the 'reserve' icon still didn't appear even with all of the updates.

Can you explain why the updates didn't download?

Most likely due to some problems with system files, corruption or something.
That happens when you update windows, that is why it is important to check if the system files are fine when you have updated windows.

So if windows is updating automatically, in the background, should I be checking from time to time that the system files are ok, or only when there seems to be a problem? How do I check the files are fine?

You should check from time to time if there are updates installed, only if there are new updates installed then you should perform the sfc/scannow command.
If the files are fine, sfc will say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any intergrity violation"
