Windows 8.1 from store -what do i do ?

Win.8 = 64 bit PC

hi - when i go to 'store' for updating to 8.1 must i have already downloaded & installed required updates needed to allow the installation of 8.1 or will the 8.1 program 'search' and give me what i need while downloading 8.1? (i don't have auto-downloads from Windows (Microsoft) - i choose the ones i want to install because i didn't want Windows to do an auto-update to 8.1 without my knowledge and one of the 'updates' i keep getting (repeatedly with different K-numbers) would do that... (oh - is there a calendar time-limit available to update 8.1 ? also can you update directly to 10 from ''8'' ? thanks in advance

You must already have the required updates.
There is no time limit of updating. I've updated several times to windows 8.1 since it became available.

i'M sure i don't have the required updates since i don't have 'auto update' selected for Win. Updates area...i look at what is offered and then choose ...the only updates i do are the 'security' updates ; removal tool...there are some offered that would do auto update to 8.1 (hidden) then another ''hidden''' that is one needed for the 8.1 update ... if i attempt the 8.1 update from the Windows Store would it 'detect' what i need and install so 8.1 can be a clean-install? Or do i have to hunt/peck for what i need from Windows Update site and manually do them myself? thanks so much

Without the required updates you can't upgrade to w8.1.
The store will give you an error code that'll lead to missing updates, so you'll have to install the required updates yourself.

if the 'store' 'shows' what updates are missing i should have them since i've saved (HIDDEN) what was offered & what referred to as 'needed' updates for installing(updating) 8.1 updates - otherwise i don't know where/how to find them

The store shows only error codes, just like with bluescreens.
With the error codes you have to search a little bit what update it is. In every case you can find the error codes at the site of microsoft that gives you more information about the error and what you have to do to resolve (which update you need to install).

If you download the MediaCreationTool from MS, then you can upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10. In order for the upgrade to be done via Windows update, you have to be running Win 8.1.

That is indeed possible, but what happens with the license key when you do this? Will windows 10 recognize it or do you have to buy a new license?
Because as far as I know windows 10 doesn't recognize the license key when performing an upgrade from windows 8, could be that I'm wrong.

If you use the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO then you can do the upgrade. The license key works the same. In your case, the Win 8 key will be used fr the Win 10 upgrade.
