Every time i go to install any update, whether it be a security update, or a simple definition update for defender it ALWAYS says downloading windows 10... is there any way to get rid of that stupid message? I have removed the update that would constantly try downloading windows 10 on boot up.

Attachment shows exactly what i'm talking about.

You have to get rid of the related KB 3035583 in Windows updates in Program Updates in the Control Panel. Then hide that same KB when you reboot and go into Windows update.

Same thing here. I had KB3035583 installed on my Win8.1 system, but I've removed it and rebooted. Now, I have the same problem as the OP: EVERY single update says "Downloading Windows 10" and so far it never fails to startle me a little bit. It's quite annoying.

I did have something strange happen right before this issue started, though. Out of the blue, I got a UAC prompt to allow Windows Update to install something. It wasn't a regular update; it was some component of WU itself, I think. I hesitated because I do not trust things like that, but I did click Yes.

I never got any notification to install anything for w10, before i found out about all the major security flaws with it i had to force download 10, it failed to install everytime so i gave up. i then realized even before that it failed to install about 8 times..... so thats why i removed the update in question. i dont care about the windows 10 downloading message, its just unsettling to see.

I ran Win10 for about 11 days and it was a complete mess. Nothing but constant hassle and problems from all sides. So I restored from a Win8.1 image and now this crap... I'm going to see if restoring again and removing KB3035583 and KB2976978 before Win8.1 even has a chance to connect to WU prevents this issue--because it does annoy me.

Edit: I restored, killed my internet connection, then booted Win8.1 and removed those 2 updates and cleared WU completely. I still have the stupid "Downloading Windows 10" thing shown whenever regular updates are being downloaded. These idiots can't even get a graphical component of WU right; and we're surprised W10 is a disaster?

You might also want to check C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder to see if there's is a W10Setup application in one of the sub-folders that seems to automatically download the W10 upgrade. Even when I uninstalled both KB's responsible for the W10 upgrade, it continued to download in the background eating up some of my storage space (~6 GB) and created a $Windows.~BT file on my C: drive. Once I deleted the Win10Setup file everything was back to normal.

Thanks. I don't see any W10 crap under SoftwareDistribution. I did run Disk Cleanup and selected the option to delete WU garbage. Maybe it actually worked.

Yeah, I think using disk cleanup will also delete the contents in that Download folder that's under SoftwareDistribution. If I remember correctly, once you manually run WU again, you might have to hide the KB updates that's associated with W10 Upgrade and any other updates, optional or otherwise, that you have hidden before.
