had the same error

My little "get windows 10" icon disappeared. Manually starting gwx.exe failed with the same error message.
I fixed it.
In internet explorer, make sure that the "security" and "privacy" sliders are low enough to allow gwx to start. I just lowered them down to "medium" on both. Restarted, and now it's back.

I have exactly the same issue and the above fix unfortunately does not solve it.

I checked eagerly yesterday morning to see if the installation for 10 had downloaded/delievered - at that stage, the "GWX" icons were there on both my laptop and my tablet (both Windows 8.1) - then a few hours later (without installing any updates or changing anything) they were gone and haven't returned since. In the Windows update dialog there is still a small "View confirmation" link which used to open up the GWX interface, but now shows nothing.

What's going on? I also have "hresult: element not found"

Thanks for the reply.

I'd have preferred to have updated through GWX, but I am now starting to wonder, what is the procedure here? The GWX icon seems to have now disappeared from anyone's PC I've heard about, suggesting it is by design? However, how will the update be delivered if it's not even running? Very confusing.
