How can you disable windows defender updates

I have an Asus T100 tablet running Win 8.1 and had been having problems with windows updates. I was having so many failures that I have now done a complete re-install. This has gone well but, during the install and doing the miriad of windows updates, the windows defender updates continually failed. To ovecome these failures, I had to go into defender and do the updates from there (which then cleared the defender updates from windows update).

I have now installed Norton Security and Windows Defender has been disabled. However, whenever I do a windows update, defender updates are still coming though as important updates which windows then tries, and fails, to install.

Are there any settings that can prevent windows updates checking for defender updates when defender is not being used?

you can uncheck the updates you don't need and hide them, so when you search for updates they don't show up. Also se the updates from automatic to manual
