Need Help Please! Freezing on Checking For Update

Hi, i just got windows 8.1 started to install it fine connected to the internet and decided to update so i tried the app way and it either dosent load or it keeps saying checking for updates so then i try the control panel way and click on update windows and it just freezes then sometimes it goes onto the checking for updates part but then just freezes on that part.
Ive tried quite a few ways like the way Microsoft way to do on their support page but that dosent do anything. was wondering if anybody knows a work around.
    Thanks
