ok you've all tried to help me insofar as upgrading to Win 10 and i appreciate it ...if i have it right I must have windows 8.1 installed inorder to get the Win 10 'reserve' icon and can't get Kb 3035583 (icon) until i upgrade to 8.1. so i guess my last question should be what if i don't want Windows 10 and stay with windows 8 or at the 'most' upgrade to 8.1 ... can i 'exist' for the next few years without Windows 10 ? thanks again for the help - i'm so confused !

Why wouldn't you upgrade, it's Free, but you must install it within one year, after that if you want it you would have to pay for it.
You must have Win 8.1.1 to get it.

If you do not want it, don't reserve it and keep running Win 8.1 if you are comfortable with that. You are not obliged to upgrade.

No you do not have to upgrade. To see how long 8 is supported and other info go to Windows lifecycle fact sheet .

I believe you can exist for quite awhile with out having windows 10. I don't think anyone can force you to upgrade as its always been and always will be. I am one of those people who doesn't upgrade too often. Infact I was still a windows vista in 2014 till I was able to get a new PC this last Christmas. Anyhow I think 8.1 Windows is a requirement to have by this point if you want windows update to keep your computer updated if your running windows 8. all though I don't know much myself I hope I helped you a little at least.

No, you don't have to upgrade. I don't plan to take advantage of the free upgrade because I don't see anything in Win 10 that I feel is worth making the switch for. I probably won't go for Win 10 until I build/buy a new machine.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
If I were staying with 8 I would at least upgrade to 8.1 but to each there own.

I will probably stay with 8.1 for at least awhile once 10 is released. I'm a believer in waiting especially with an OS even if it has been Beta tested for some time.
