I have installed Windows 8 Pro (purchased last year- legal) on my laptop/notebook and tried to update. There were 145 updates, it took me hours yesterday to update. My laptop was running W7 Home Edition before. Everything seemed to go well with the actual W8 but to update to W8.1 I have to install the 145 updates first, but get a message stating 'Failure configuring updates. Reverting changes'. I have tried again today but the same thing happens.

HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC 64bit
4g Hard Drive.

I have read a post regarding the Windows update Troubleshooting. As soon as my computer finishes reversing the updates I will try it out.

Your assistance would be appreciated.

Cannot install 8.1 until all the security downloads for W8 have been downloaded and this is what the problem is. I download them, they install, configure then I get a message saying 'Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes'. This then ties the computer up for ages and I am unable to use it.

Before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, you do not need to install all Windows 8 updates from Windows Update. You only need to install KB2871389 update, then you’ll be able to install the Windows 8.1 update via the Windows Store. Download and install KB2871389 update from link or from Windows Update.

KB2871389 (direct download link)
- All supported x86-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...5E-794177982162/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x86.msu
- All supported x64-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...49-140AB1CF7B5F/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu

But if you've opened the Windows Store and you don't see the Windows 8.1 update, then you will need to also install KB2917499 update.

Download the Windows 8.1 ISO image file.
Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

In Windows 8, mount the Windows 8.1 ISO image file by right-clicking the ISO image file and choosing Mount. If you don’t see Mount command from the context menu, go to Open with -> Windows Explorer instead.

Run the setup (setup.exe) file (see screenshot below).

Thank you so much for this genet. I will follow your instructions tomorrow, I am too tired today as been on the phone to Microsoft yesterday and today and had no luck.

Will let you know what happens.

Just an update to my problem. I installed the kb2871389 update and tried to update to W8.1 but still had the same problem.
I decided to repair Windows 8 and installed my disk, thereby giving me a clean install of Windows 8. I then downloaded the kb2871389 again, installed it, then updated to Windows 8.1..........everything working fine!! Not bad for a 75 yr old lady!

My thanks again for the help supplied by both KYHI and genet, much appreciated.
