Hi guys, I have these pending optional updates, question is, is there a need to install them? According to the Microsoft support page, some of these updates fix certain issues on some devices. I am not experiencing any of the said problems so I am wondering if I still need to install the updates. Thanks :) Capture.PNG

I had two of those, KB3042085 and 2976978. One seems to be yet another pre W10 update. Installed them OK.

If you install these would you look at something first :) just to satisfy my curiosity. What is your free disc space before and then after installing these ?

That's correct, but my response was for the size of a windows update, the realtek update was about 5MB it said.

oh ok, I guess what you're trying to say is Windows Updates have a nasty habit of concealing their true size haha

I find pretty much all Windows Updates have an unexplained effect on free space. These two (it was two for me) updates have taken my free space from 55.6gb to 54.7gb. I have just run the DISM clean up/reset base command and I am only back to 54.9gb.

I've noticed this behaviour from day one with W8.1. Even a small Adobe Flash update can knock perhaps 1gb from the free space... mostly it does come back over several days.

At face value these two updates have consumed 0.9gb.

Thanks John. What is happening over there sounds pretty drastic, mine is nothing like that bad. From memory and I would say I've lost around 1.5gb to updates since clean installing last July. What puzzles me is the way a seemingly small (and often single) update can hammer the freespace, but as mentioned it does usually recover on its own. That Realtek one from last week was way off base though.

When installing updates my routine is,

1/ Install.

2/ Restart.

3/ Disk clean + System file clean.

4/ Browser clean.

5/ Import cookie file.

6/ Restart.

7/ Defrag via command line.

All that never frees more than perhaps 20 or 30mb however over the following days the free space will suddenly re-appear... until the next time.

The other day I followed TairikuOkami's link to the Microsoft file of additional DISM commands and ran the 'reset base' option for the first time ever. That brought me back to around 55.6gb free, around what it was last summer. Todays two updates have dropped that to 54.9 gb despite following the above regime. There was a lot of disk activity following these updates... I wonder if it was an information (for W10) gathering exercise ?

See...its happened again !

After installing these updates and doing both a disk clean and DISM reset base routine as mentioned above these two updates seemed to have consumed a lot of space.

Until today !!! After doing nothing and checking this morning the space is now back.
