    Windows Update Mystery

This morning, Friday, 27th, I was surprised when I connected that 10 Windows Updates downloaded. (Win 8.1)

    - I researched the update numbers and they were issued in 2014.

    - Updates installed and computer restarted successfully, but at the end of my session (approx. 1.5 hrs) the computer would not automatically shutdown. Manual shutdown was required after waiting about 20 minutes.

    - The updates are not listed as being installed under Update History, but are listed as installed under Installed Updates.

    - I did a Reset approx. 3 weeks ago. But upon completion of the Reset, insured all available updates were downloaded and have manually checked for updates about 3 times since. I receive Windows Updates automatically.

Computer is working fine, but do I have a cause for concern for malware, etc ? (AV is Kaspersky IS 2015, scan negative.)

    Updates received:

    KB2998174 KB2984006 KB2962409
    KB2995388 KB2980654 KB2952164
    KB2995004 KB2976978
    KB2993100 KB2975719

Good practice is to use system restore points. One when know system running optimal, manually, then after awhile of anything adding, again knowing all is working good.

Try run a SFC (system file checker) at Admin command prompt. Also then run this same command prompt
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    Then SFC again.

Think may have Malware, although does not usually affect this way, run first MRT.EXE (Windows Malicious Removal tool) at run command. Try Malwarebytes free, run that. Not sure about reasons why some updates did not show in history, although seen some myself that way.

Thanks for the great advice !

I completed all. Initial SFC scan resulted in corrupt files, ran dism, second SFC was clean.

    MRT.EXE and Malwarebytes both negative.

Still a mystery on why/how updates downloaded and did not download previously. Interesting also that the 10 updates this AM did not create a Restore Point. Very strange. Should I consider a Reset just to be safe ?

Your welcome, glad for some resolve. Malwarebytes is very good to use as a second scan, Windows Malicious removal tool is pretty decent too, both on finding stuff some Anti-Viruses may miss.

Well corrupted files may explain some or all of issues you had. Seems to me Windows 8.1 unlike Windows 7 does not tend to make restore points after updates. Good reasons why i make manual ones before and then after i know everything is working good. Notice one restore point i have just tends to grow in size possibly instead of creating another, although not sure of it all.

Should you consider a reset ? How is it running now any freeze ups ? As you may know a reset or refresh going to loose all you put on PC after, so have reinstall everything back. For me i rather do a clean install, but then have to put all Windows updates back in again, tedious job.

Possible with updates certain ones have to be there before others can go in, but corruptions in files could of caused this. Possible corruption in Windows update, this something have to watch for now if it will accepts all updates. Let us know how it goes before trying reset or refresh.

Good point ! I will monitor updates.

I did do a clean install using the Toshiba drive wiper. I just wanted to be safe and have peace of mind. I was very concerned about the mysterious event. I am the type of user that does not keep much on the computer and have backup of important data.

    Thanks, again !

    Your most welcome.

It's good to use an external device to backup important documents, pictures, videos and whatever you do not want to loose and can not be replaced easily.

True i like a clean install myself over refresh and reset as said, but it's a matter of how much you have to put back on plus all those updates about 100 or so makes more of time for it, not just software you put in. 99% of the time it fixes your issues as long as it is not hardware related.
