Solved Computer stuck on "Working on Updates"

Hi everyone,

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 8.1. I am not sure which version of 8.1 I have.

At the end of the day yesterday, I went to shut my machine down, and in place of the normal shutdown icon there was a message saying something like "Install updates and shutdown." I clicked on this option and walked away.

This morning I came in and started up my computer. A blue screen appeared with the message "Working on Updates, XX% complete, Don't turn off your computer." The percent indicator incremented from 0% to 100% and seemed to get stuck there.

I went on Google and looked for a solution to this problem, and found an article that said to wait for three hours and if it is still stuck on that screen, turn the machine off and restart it. After three hours that screen was still showing so I restarted the machine.

After restarting the machine, I got a message saying "Getting Windows ready, Don't turn off your computer." After a few minutes, the screen returns to the same blue screen with the message "Working on Updates, 100% complete, Don't turn off your computer."

I have tried restarting the machine several times and each time I get the same result. This started at 7:00 this morning and it is now 3:30 pm so it has been over 8 hours that it has been stuck on this screen.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to solve this problem?

And if/when Dudes advice works and you repair your system; think about downloading Macrium Reflect to make system images and a system restore disk. I make an image every 3rd Saturday in the month. This is a couple of weeks from the last patch Tuesday in case there are problems with the updates that need to be corrected and a couple of weeks before the next Patch Tuesday so I know I have a good safety net.

Thank you for the advice Dude and Cliff S. I have initiated the system restore process and there is a message on the screen saying "System Restore - Restoring files..."

Do you know how long the System Restore process usually takes?

If this is successful I will give the Macrium Reflect a try as suggested.

I don't know how long it takes(been using system images since it became possible) but when it's done I recommend also you run

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup&sfc/scannow&Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth&sfc/scannow&pause
in a ADMIN command prompt, to make sure everything is fixed. Just cut and paste, don't try to type it because the spacing is important.

Thanks again Dude and Cliff, the system restore was successful, it took about 30 minutes but it worked. I will now run the utility that Cliff suggested and try the Macrium Reflect application as suggested to make it easier to restore next time.

Not quite solved yet

Hi everyone,

As I indicated yesterday, the system restore has worked and my PC seems to be functioning normally again, thanks for the help in that regard.

However, before leaving the office, I ran the DISM utility that Cliff S suggested and it seems that it has found some problems that it can't fix. I have attached a screenshot of the message, but it basically says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I have also attached the CBS log referred to in the screen shot. I had a look at the log but I don't know what I am looking for.

Cliff or Dude, do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix the corrupt files found by the DISM utility?

Reboot and run

sfc /scannow
again and see if it comes up clean, if not reboot and run again... sometimes it can take 2-3 tries. But you always have to reboot when the System File Checker finds something.

Thanks for the help everyone, I ended up running the scannow utility 3 times, then the DISM utility, then the scannow tool again with a reboot between each scan. It took a few tries but now the scan comes up clean so it seems like everything is back to normal.
