Although I did not need it nor will I ever use it, I installed it anyway and experienced no problems or freezing afterwards.
I read somewhere, don't remember where, that Avast has stopped something in WU working properly. WU had some semi-installed components sitting in a queue somewhere in the system and it wanted to complete the installation but can't. Windows Explorer would then hang. Uninstalling Avast and reinstalling it fixed the problem.
I know you use Avast and it was just a thought.
