Yep, but begs the question, Linux will run on a machine for years and not leak resources all over the floor and down the stairs and elevator shaft (so I've read), but Windows...

I managed to terminate the update by stopping the vcredist.exe service in Task Manager. Windows update continued installing the rest of the selected updates succesfully. Luckily for me, I selected updates that didn't need a restart so a hang was fortunately prevented for me.

However, I read that by cancelling the concerning update there are 2 folders left in de C drive. Could someone please tell me which 2 folders they are and if it's safe to remove them or not?

Well, in my case it was on the S: drive. I think it looks for the drive with the most free space and extracts everything into a folder there.

The folders are on the root of the drive and have long random names like "a2978dhi9w8127129108".

Inside you'll see a bunch of files and folders and stuff like vcredist..., 1033, and other code page resources, etc.

You might need to take ownership of the folder.

Which ones are they? Could you please give their folder names, paths or show a screenshot? I'd want to remove as many leftovers as I can.

Also, this guy here says he got 2 folders left after he cancelled the update. He has a screenshot but for some reason it's not showing up for me.

Thanks a lot for your effort. I seem to have only 1 randomly named folder in the C: directory with the date I tried installing the update on. Perhaps there were 3 updates left in your case when you cancelled the whole thing which led to 3 leftover folders?

    Yesterday the update was pulled.

It did go away from my Windows Update list. but today it re-appeared.

I tried to update it again and this time got the following error:

    Installation Failure:
Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643:
Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (KB3001652).

Apparently this is due to not having sufficient permissions to do something...

...Hard to imagine that Windows Update does not have sufficient permissions to update Windows.
