Uninstall all 3rd party antivirus and firewall programs in safe mode with their special tool(s).

Reboot to normal mode.

Set the Windows Defender and Windows Firewall services to Automatic and start them too.

Delete the entire contents inside C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Reboot then try again. If you've changed the startup type for any services, set them to default too.

I think there is a problem with your installation. I would suggest you to repair you installation using Startup repair tool and see if it works.:)

This error message is usually caused by problems with the hard drive -

Open Command Prompt with administrative privileges, enter following command (assuming Windows 8 installed on C:\ drive)

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient! :D

I'm betting that 3rd party antivirus was not uninstalled, or if attempted to uninstall, it did not uninstall well (i.e. removal tool not used in safe mode.)

It's an access violation issue.

Let's forget Windows Update for a moment. If your pc is really restarting with a bsod, then this will be so easy to solve.

Simply run this tool by right clicking and choosing "Run as admin": http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2829-windows-8-log-collector.html#post33808

After it grabs all info to desktop, right click on the files and/or folders highlighted and choose Send To>>Compressed (Zip) Folder.

Attach the zip here to a new post.

You know...I have the answer for you. It really just came to me out of nowhere while away from the pc and not even thinking of it consciously.

First, it dawned on me that you are using a pirated Windows version but then I thought that it wouldn't make too much sense since 8 is free. The clue to me is that your machine restarts every 2 hours. So why is your machine doing that if you are using legit Windows?

The answer: Set your time and date to be correct in bios. Reboot and enjoy Windows Update working again.
