Hello everyone

I'm running Windows 8 (not 8.1) on old laptops, and I've read somewhere on the internet (can't remember where) that certain Windows updates for will stop Windows 8 from working, on old laptops. Does that ring a bell? Sorry I can't be more specific. Have you heard something like that, and if so, what should I watch out for?

Thanks
Samuel

(PS. My old laptops are:
Toshiba Satellite C660D
HP Compaq NC6320
HP Compaq 6710b)

Microsoft is going to stop support for windows 8 - they are forcing the upgrade to windows 8.1

They said the same thing about previous versions of Windows, but that does not prevent anyone from using those versions. If you are aware of a preventable tactic that Microsoft will employ to *force* me to upgrade (e.g. by installing a Windows Update update that will break the computer unless I upgrade to 8.1), then please tell me about it.

There are some updates that have been more troublesome than others. The most troublesome ones have been withdrawn from Windows update. But even so the percentage of systems having problems is very low. It is just that when the user base is as large as Windows 8 is even a small percentage having problems produces very large numbers. In many case the problems are caused by third party applications or drivers. Usually only large organizations can justify the time to research individual updates.

Generally you would install all updates offered.

Many experienced members of this forum maintain image backups of the OS. This allows them to revert to a working OS if problems develop.
