Win 8 Updates way beyond ridiculous

    My God,

Since I installed Windows 8.1, there have been over 100+ updates & they still keep coming.

Also, the updates are accelerating in number.

I have to think that this is going to either make my system unstable or bog down.

What's going on? Can someone illuminate me?

When did you install - 100 updates about right if installed 6 months ago - using Defender, I get definition updates almost every day for that

I have just finished downloading and installing the updates for my Win 8.1 64-bit laptop. Took forever on my 4Mbps DL line, where the actual DL speed is around 2.4 Mbps on a good day

I now have to update my Desktop PC, and there is just over 1 GB of updates, and many of them seem to be for Windows Office, which is used on the Desktop. I run Libre Office on my Laptop

I am seriously considering dumping Win OS on both Laptop & Desktop and going back to Ubuntu, which I was using for years until I went the Win 8 OS route.

It would be great if microsoft would go the mini upgrade route that ubuntu does when there are a lot of updates to the kernel after initial install(eg. like Trusty Tahr 14.04 to 14.04.1).

You can set WU to just look for updates and also just for important ones. After you get notification, (normally once a month), you can decide what and when to install. You can also set to never look for updates but I would not advise that as most of them are for security reasons. It's good to have updates as new threats are shoving every day. You can also download updates separately and use same for both computers and so save some download time.

can't blame microsoft for trying to make OS more secure/better.

After a fresh install i leave the system on updating over night. No biggie.. (have 2MBps line)

True true. my mobile broadband say's 7Kbps but it often shoots up to the Mbps range depending upon time & traffic in my neighborhood. It's just that there are better ways than 10,000 updates for a re/fresh install. A partial upgrade system basically downloads the latest kernel/daily build for the OS, which would be a lot less to download and need only 1 reboot because everything would be changed at once. It works kind of like a incremental backup in reverse, where the system(WinPE) could compare the differences in the build.

That is exactly the same as I have my Win update settings configured on my Laptop, and I do look at the offered updates, and try to only install the ones that seem to be important / critical.
But there were still a load of updates, especially on the Desktop PC which is used by my partner .. and she is not at all PC-innards knowledgeable, so I check the important & recommended updates before I install them for her. But I was not sure about the offered MS Office updates (I have not used MS Office form many years). She does MS Office so I downloaded them as well on her PC.

If you have more than one machine to update, have you considered downloading the updates manually from Microsoft, then putting them on a usb drive for the other machines? I did this earlier this week to update 2 laptops and saved myself 3/4gb of download.

Assuming both machines have the same version of Windows, of course .
