My God,

Since I installed Windows 8.1, there have been over 100+ updates & they still keep coming.

Also, the updates are accelerating in number.

I have to think that this is going to either make my system unstable or bog down.

What's going on? Can someone illuminate me?

When did you install - 100 updates about right if installed 6 months ago - using Defender, I get definition updates almost every day for that

I have just finished downloading and installing the updates for my Win 8.1 64-bit laptop. Took forever on my 4Mbps DL line, where the actual DL speed is around 2.4 Mbps on a good day

I now have to update my Desktop PC, and there is just over 1 GB of updates, and many of them seem to be for Windows Office, which is used on the Desktop. I run Libre Office on my Laptop

I am seriously considering dumping Win OS on both Laptop & Desktop and going back to Ubuntu, which I was using for years until I went the Win 8 OS route.

It would be great if microsoft would go the mini upgrade route that ubuntu does when there are a lot of updates to the kernel after initial install(eg. like Trusty Tahr 14.04 to 14.04.1).

You can set WU to just look for updates and also just for important ones. After you get notification, (normally once a month), you can decide what and when to install. You can also set to never look for updates but I would not advise that as most of them are for security reasons. It's good to have updates as new threats are shoving every day. You can also download updates separately and use same for both computers and so save some download time.
This is how I set mine up:

True true. my mobile broadband say's 7Kbps but it often shoots up to the Mbps range depending upon time & traffic in my neighborhood. It's just that there are better ways than 10,000 updates for a re/fresh install. A partial upgrade system basically downloads the latest kernel/daily build for the OS, which would be a lot less to download and need only 1 reboot because everything would be changed at once. It works kind of like a incremental backup in reverse, where the system(WinPE) could compare the differences in the build.

That is exactly the same as I have my Win update settings configured on my Laptop, and I do look at the offered updates, and try to only install the ones that seem to be important / critical.
But there were still a load of updates, especially on the Desktop PC which is used by my partner .. and she is not at all PC-innards knowledgeable, so I check the important & recommended updates before I install them for her. But I was not sure about the offered MS Office updates (I have not used MS Office form many years). She does MS Office so I downloaded them as well on her PC.

If you have more than one machine to update, have you considered downloading the updates manually from Microsoft, then putting them on a usb drive for the other machines? I did this earlier this week to update 2 laptops and saved myself 3/4gb of download.

Assuming both machines have the same version of Windows, of course :D.

You're one of those lucky ones. I have a colleague at work that I go out and shoot pool and drink beer with once in a while, that after installing windows 7 when he first turned his laptop on 3 years ago never updated it or cleaned out his crapware. For him it's been turn the laptop on and woosh to pornhub or whatever, maybe town hall information or see what's on sale, that's it. He has absolutely no idea about computer secutity. Anyhow he asked me to take a look at his laptop for him, after I fixed another colleagues(an old fujitsu work station) that wouldn't even boot to bios. I was thinking Yeeha what all am I going to find. First of all for an AV he had whatever came with it 3 years after the trial ran out, so basically nothing. Also he still had IE8 (remember no updates) I downloaded ccleaner and did a cleaning to my surprise it didn't find much to clean windows was taking care of the cleaning itself or at least only using it's assigned space then overwriting. I then downloaded IOBIT(eek!) Uninstaller 4 to get a better view of what all was installed on his machine(programs and browser addons) I then procceded to uninstall only the crapware he didn't use(some was useful to him). Then I did another run with ccleaner this time checking and cleaning the registry (ouch). I then downloaded MSE for him and updated only it and ran a Full run. Like Gomer Pile used to say "Surprise Surprise Surprise !!!" not one bit of maleware? After all that I downloaded all the windows updates did a boot optimization defrag checiked start up programs and was done after 5 hours. Now think about it 3 years and absolutely no security updates/precautions and NO malware. Needles to say I automated everything (updates, cleaning, MSE, and defrag) setting it for the times his laptop might be on and told him when he goes shopping ´leave it on till he comes home. Now it boots faster for him atleast. I'm curious though, now everything is set up correctly, will he get malware or a system crash first.

Believe it or not but MS is not going to do anything more than absolutely necessary. One of the security updates last month plugged a hole that was known to exist last 19 years !!

MS Windows doesn't equal MS Office. If anything you can dump MS Office and use Libre Office for hers too.
Why dump something so expensive ? Just because of updates, they could be disabled for Office.

This is one of the things that I actually miss about service packs.

But this sheds light on the fact that MS is working a lot harder at fixing bugs and problems and security issues.

Windows and Linux enthusiast. Logitech G35 Headset.
I bought a new laptop 12 months ago and haven't done any Win-Updates. Running perfectly with no problems what so ever.

It's about peace of mind too. Security is the reason many are running 8.1.
Else you could even install Win 7 SP1 and turn updates off, and it'll keep on working just fine. No surprise there.
