Win 8 Updates way beyond ridiculous

  1. #11

I bought a new laptop 12 months ago and haven't done any Win-Updates. Running perfectly with no problems what so ever.

You're one of those lucky ones. I have a colleague at work that I go out and shoot pool and drink beer with once in a while, that after installing windows 7 when he first turned his laptop on 3 years ago never updated it or cleaned out his crapware. For him it's been turn the laptop on and woosh to pornhub or whatever, maybe town hall information or see what's on sale, that's it. He has absolutely no idea about computer secutity. Anyhow he asked me to take a look at his laptop for him, after I fixed another colleagues(an old fujitsu work station) that wouldn't even boot to bios. I was thinking Yeeha what all am I going to find. First of all for an AV he had whatever came with it 3 years after the trial ran out, so basically nothing. Also he still had IE8 (remember no updates) I downloaded ccleaner and did a cleaning to my surprise it didn't find much to clean windows was taking care of the cleaning itself or at least only using it's assigned space then overwriting. I then downloaded IOBIT(eek!) Uninstaller 4 to get a better view of what all was installed on his machine(programs and browser addons) I then procceded to uninstall only the crapware he didn't use(some was useful to him). Then I did another run with ccleaner this time checking and cleaning the registry (ouch). I then downloaded MSE for him and updated only it and ran a Full run. Like Gomer Pile used to say "Surprise Surprise Surprise !!!" not one bit of maleware? After all that I downloaded all the windows updates did a boot optimization defrag checiked start up programs and was done after 5 hours. Now think about it 3 years and absolutely no security updates/precautions and NO malware. Needles to say I automated everything (updates, cleaning, MSE, and defrag) setting it for the times his laptop might be on and told him when he goes shopping Žleave it on till he comes home. Now it boots faster for him atleast. I'm curious though, now everything is set up correctly, will he get malware or a system crash first.

Believe it or not but MS is not going to do anything more than absolutely necessary. One of the security updates last month plugged a hole that was known to exist last 19 years !!

MS Windows doesn't equal MS Office. If anything you can dump MS Office and use Libre Office for hers too.

Why dump something so expensive ? Just because of updates, they could be disabled for Office.

This is one of the things that I actually miss about service packs.

But this sheds light on the fact that MS is working a lot harder at fixing bugs and problems and security issues.

It's about peace of mind too. Security is the reason many are running 8.1.
Else you could even install Win 7 SP1 and turn updates off, and it'll keep on working just fine. No surprise there.
