Solved KB3000850 causing freeze

Installed the November rollup and noticed items didn't seem to open from the right click menu on the start button. I have the control panel setup as a menu on Classic Shell Start Menu and it would freeze explorer when attempting to access that menu. I could access the control panel by opening windows explorer (file explorer) windows and going through the shortcut on the Desktop without it freezing, but from time to time I'd see the green "loading" bar slowing move across, as if it was refreshing something. Needless to say this was annoying so I started investigating and found that uninstalling kb3000850 seemed to fix the problem.

Any ideas on how to deal with this?

Chances compatibility problem with Classic shell with new update, last new version of Classic Shell said it fixed issues with Spring Windows 8.1 update. Although some are having issues with this update also.

Maybe there will be a update soon for Classic Shell that will fix this issue. Only think try change those settings you made differently to see if it works, also make sure at least have newest version of Classic Shell. Green bar across Windows explorer when it is loading, if slow maybe an issue, slow response hard drive access.

Not sure to suggest removing the Windows update yet. Or you can try reinstalling Classic Shell if have the newest version.

Honestly I'm convinced its NOT classic shell, due to the fact that the right click menu which is independent of classic shell performs the way it does. I've been doing some reading on the microsoft forums and there are complaints about this update. Some others were complaining about shutdown hangs, which I also encountered. Some have tried to link Avast to the problems. Yes, I use Avast so that's a possibility. However some have also stated they had similar problems on machines without Avast. It appears the update just wasn't thoroughly tested. Thanks for the reply. I am going to leave the update uninstalled and update the status of this topic as solved. Hopefully this information will be useful to others who may read it.

True i did mentioned were issues with this update with some people too, but not all. Did not know had Avast, yes i was aware of that having issues with update to. Then possibly not your Classic shell for you, it's update. For me works fine with update no issues.

Avast for sure, it's been proven on my system and many other. Avast is reportedly working on the problem and should have it licked in a day or so.

I downloaded an update for Avast so gonna try the update again. Will report results.

EDIT: Reboot was good, no issues opening control panel. Might be fixed.

Update:

After a long and protracted effort of shutting down restarts and safe modes I have finally uninstalled the offending KB3000850 update.

I also uninstalled Avast and did a clean (meaning I am on here without protection)....

Everything seems fine except it has left my Microsoft Office Mail program unopenable.....it just hangs.....

Also when should I re-install Avast? Is there a latest edition without the bug out there now?


If anyone has an idea of how to fix my Mail program that would be cool as.....

yeah...problem solved by uninstalling Avast and removing an offending update KB3000850 that also had a hand in corrupting pc's.

Re-loading the latest avast fixed most issues but the corruption left Office and other programs deficient.
