Windows 8 won't update or restore

I have not updated Windows 8 to 8.1 yet

Before yesterday the last time I ran some updates was at the end of September.
I ran the update again yesterday and it installed some but failed on others.
    Heres what was installed

    Others however failed

I tried to install them individually - and they failed once more.
I tried downloading the patches - and once again they failed.

So I tried a system restore to try again - and Windows failed that too.

So I'm now stuck and baffled as I have both firewall and AV running so its not likely that I have a virus/malware problem.

Has anyone any suggestions as to how I should proceed.

    Thanks.

If Firewall and AV are not MS, turn them off at least temporarily. Besides, it's sad truth that just having AV and FW is not a guarantee system would stay clean.

    Tried that (Defender and Zonealarm)

Accepted - but as some updates worked and others failed from the same batch I assume that's not the issue (could be wrong though).
I also ran the MS Update repair tool and it reported this

However if I run it a second time it reports the same info. ??????

Be patient, there's a lot to check and eventually replace.

Will report results back (positive or negative) when done.

    Completed - successfully

Now running Scannow - and it seems to have repaired

    Attachment 53996

Will then try running the updates again - should I reboot first???

Your attachments will not open but definitely reboot after performing the DISM and SFC commands. Did DISM repair all Windows components

Can't find the under-the-hood answers to these questions. Maybe Shawn "brink" sees this an can answer being the SR guru that he is. I've observed System restore disabled by bad guys (malware). I also happened to see it disabled after an update from 8 to 8.1. I assumed this was "normal" in...
Grandson's Hp 2000 notebook all screwed up so I conducted a restore to day one. Done all the updates and updated to windows 8.1 Everything working great. Only thing I can find that's not normal (to me) is that I now have 6 partitions. Not sure about what to do with that. Ron
Hey Guys I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine. He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update needs your help. Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing...
I ran into a minor problem with Acronis True Image 2014 after letting MSFT install Update 1 on my system. For some reason the desktop Icons go blank for ~15 seconds when I boot. As soon as I uninstall TI the problem goes away. The problem also seems to go away if I "turn off" Auto Logon to my...
I apologize if I don't post this correctly, but I need help. I have been getting the BSOD every time I try to update my computer. The updates that I am trying to apply are mandatory updates, so this happens every week when my computer requires me to update. The updates being applied are 3 ...
I am going to be restoring a Windows 8 computer to factory original, then upgrading it to 8.1. Would it be better, after the restore, to let Windows Update do all the original Windows 8 updates, then go to the Windows Store and upgrade to 8.1, or should I go to the Store right after the...
