Windows 8 won't update or restore

I have not updated Windows 8 to 8.1 yet

Before yesterday the last time I ran some updates was at the end of September.
I ran the update again yesterday and it installed some but failed on others.
Heres what was installed

windows update list 17-11-14.JPG

Others however failed

windows update fails list 17-11-14.JPG

I tried to install them individually - and they failed once more.
I tried downloading the patches - and once again they failed.

So I tried a system restore to try again - and Windows failed that too.

So I'm now stuck and baffled as I have both firewall and AV running so its not likely that I have a virus/malware problem.

Has anyone any suggestions as to how I should proceed.

Thanks.

PS A sample update Error code - 800705B9

If Firewall and AV are not MS, turn them off at least temporarily. Besides, it's sad truth that just having AV and FW is not a guarantee system would stay clean.

Tried that (Defender and Zonealarm)

Accepted - but as some updates worked and others failed from the same batch I assume that's not the issue (could be wrong though).

I also ran the MS Update repair tool and it reported this
windows update repair tool 17-11-14.JPG

However if I run it a second time it reports the same info. ??????

Be patient, there's a lot to check and eventually replace.

Will report results back (positive or negative) when done.

UPDATE:

Completed - successfully

Now running Scannow - and it seems to have repaired

Will then try running the updates again - should I reboot first???

Your attachments will not open but definitely reboot after performing the DISM and SFC commands. Did DISM repair all Windows components

I'll try the screenshot again below

checkhealth.jpg

As you can see it repaired some file errors.

I also ran 'scannow' again afterwards, and this time it worked.

scannow2.jpg

I then rebooted and re-ran windows update which this time installed all but 3 of the updates.
I rebooted again and then it allowed me to install the other 3 updates one at a time - insisting on re-boot between each.

So now I'm hoping future updates will not be an issue.

Thanks for your time and assistance - much appreciated.

System file are usual first suspect. When in doubt, do those repairs and checks.

Back again

I haven't marked the thread as solved yet because I still have one (just one) update

failed2.jpg

which fails every time

failed.jpg

I also tried to install the self installer package which I downloaded directly form MS - to be informed that the self installer won't run as the certificate is invalid

Is it likely to cause me any problems in future if I just hide and ignore this update

Hmmmm ..... Strange.

Just to be sure I decided to rerun scannow to recheck for problems and it came up clear

dism2.jpg

So I I ran DISM again to see if it discovered any new problems and the result was - found a problem but couldn't repair it as some components were missing.

Any idea what this means??

I have discovered why the update KB3008273 hangs and will not install.

Apparently this is an update to 'Enable' the automatic installation of the 8.1 upgrade.
For this update to install it requires a previous update to have been installed - KB2871389.
KB2871389 apparently prepares windows 8 for the 8.1 update (hence KB3008273 needs it installed first) - but for some reason this is not installed on my laptop??
