Windows not activated on a new laptop?

    Windows not activated on a new laptop?


    Hello, I purchased a HP Pavillionx360 just yesterday from Bestbuy, I set it up and shut it off right after. A few mins ago , when I turned it on it's asking me to activate Windows, it says the product key is being used on another pc, error code: 0xC004C008. I have no idea about the product key whatsoever. I bought a laptop about two years ago and its windows was already activated, but this one...it's asking me for it. I have no idea what to do, I didn't receive any product key. Please help.

    ... If this PC is under warranty the retailer should fix it anyway.

    (BTW are all Bestbuy PC's new? Just wondering if that may have an RMA'd mobo which the OEM will not update with a key but rather provide one separately - but just thinking aloud though, as I've seen a few of these)

    Hey man, thanks for taking a look. Like I mentioned, I ordered it online from BestBuy thinking it was new but now that this is happening, well its probably not. I haven't installed any software whatsoever, not even browser. It's really frustrating me that this product key is being used on another PC, which is what it says. Should I just run to the nearest BestBuy and return it? This is what I got after I ran the scan you provided:

    If you just bought the computer from Best Buy you should be talking to them to fix or replace the computer. I can see this happening if you got an "Open Box" unit but not brand new. What else is going to happen.

    Yes, all checks out except the key... if you run a command prompt as admin with this:

    slmgr.vbs -ato

    ..and you still get the error, unfortunately the key is a dud.

    Then I agree, best would be to take it up with Bestbuy.

    (Just an aside and not pointed at the OP but as a heads up to all... never purchase a demo product, some unscrupulous people will use our Showkey script on those to steal the embedded key - be careful.)

    win8.1.1 enterprise


    right click on start icon lower left corner ,go to system and check the activation status there .maybe option to reactivate
    or a call to Microsoft to do the activation with you may work in a case like this .
    go to command prompt and type in slui.exe 4 ,pick your location and a phone number will appear ,call it for assistance .

    same as for win7

    Thanx Jacks, that is an option - just remember activation in Windows 7 was perpetual, in Windows 8 online checks are done regularly and it could de-activate an offline activation.

    Don't mean to be pessimistic, just think a new PC should activate normally, and Bestbuy should provide a proper solution.

    Just for info, I installed 8.1 over 7 on my laptop, during installation it asked me to 'activate' so I did. Then I got a message -activation successful - and it continued. I think the dud key might be the problem as I also have a dud key but with Media Center, it wont let me download it but thats another thread.

    Thank you all for dropping by and giving feedbacks, they're greatly appreciated. I'm sorry I took a while to reply, I had way too much going on in my hands. I went to a Bestbuy and simply asked for an exchange for the same model, they didn't ask me a single thing. Might be because they're the ones at fault. I got my laptop, everything's fine now.
