Help!!! Don't want 8.1 -banner freezing computer !!!

PLEASE help !!! in past when reminder to update to 8.1 appeared one had option to choose when to install the update including the option: NEVER (which i would choose and was able to continue using my computer -banner would disappear.
As of yesterday, only option to get rid of that banner now is to choose 1-4 hrs (''never' is no longer an option) and my computer is totally 'frozen' & greyed-out so only way to get rid of this 'notice' is to do a total shut-down of computer !!!.... this last time i chose 4 hrs but i don't want to upgrade ! what can i do? thanks in advance....edythe

    Hello Edythe,

If the message in the tutorial below is what you are seeing, then you could use the method in the tutorial below to disable it.

Update to Windows 8.1 Store Prompt - Enable or Disable

If it's an update in Windows Update instead, then see if hiding the update will stop it from prompting you to install it.

    Lenovo PC/win 8
Hello = followed your guidelines in the illustration you sent - did find the update, clicked to uninstal and instantly(!) at same time i clicked to 'uninstall' a popup appeared saying pc had to be restarted -clicked ok and then all hell broke loose after pc restarted - LOL screen showed LENVO & it started to do some 'configuration' (don't remember all the facts -sorry if i confuse you)... showed some 'scales' of starting to count-down from 1 - 100%; then onto next 'menu' by Lenovo - again the 'circle' of dots on the screen were revolving while some other gymnastics were happening again showing 1-100%.... on third 'whatever operation' statement said (with dots still circling) that ''things are being' gathered - or something like that ..and 'that' last situation stalled at 41% - waited over 1.5 hrs thinking this is all part of the 'uninstall-restart' of KB2871389....
finally gave up waiting - my 'power options' on the PC allow me to shut-down by pressing the on/off on the Tower - did that ... Lenovo did a system-restore on its own (Thank you Lenovo) -then stating it was sorry i couldn't update to 8.1 (?) but now was reverting back to my former version of Windows... wheww -- everything came back ...BUT went to windows updates and found KB2871389 is STILL THERE ! LOL .... honestly i'm afraid to start anything with this machine....
question: when a windows update is uninstalled (CP/viewing installed updates) by right-click, choosing 'uninstall' should it be a quick operation or does the computer itself need to 'reconfigure' ... thanks for all your help !!! ''clueless'' (edythe)

Yep, it can take a bit to uninstall an update. Especially this one since it's to update to 8.1.

If the update is just listed in Windows Update as available for you to select to install, then hide it instead.

Does what i described sound possible - several hours ? the beginning gymnastics went relatively smoothly but what i last saw (don't know if that was the 'final' step)...but it quickly went to 41% but then it stayed at 41% for well over 1 hr + ...i thought it just 'stalled'

unfortunatly it is right back where it was - sitting in my 'installed' updates area because Lenovo rescue took me back to my last version of windows which i guess included the last updates installed. eeek - i'm afraid to try all of this again ...

In that case, refreshing Windows should take you back to 8.

    Refresh Windows 8
I hope i didn't confuse you - you suggested doing a 'refresh' to get back to win 8 - but i still have win 8 ...i am right back where i started before i tried to uninstall that 'update' kb287139...plus it's back in place because Lenovo rescue -on it's own- took me back to last version of Win 8 i had and i guess that's 'why' the update is still in place... frankly i'm afraid to do 'refresh' because i read it can eliminate some settings i have in place, etc. i'm not a 'techie' and can understand just so much.
one suggestion you sent included going ahead and downloading 8.1 to desktop - but not installing it - is that correct? once on D.T. is there something to click on to make the upgrade notification to stop ...i didn't understand the point of downloading 8.1 as a 'fix' for that nasty popup (to upgrade to 8.1) thanks

    Yep, you lost me.

If you are back to Windows 8 now, then you could use the tutorials I posted above to hide the update in Windows Update, and disable the update prompt.

I can't Hide the update because the update is already in place -=installed in updates...only way to get rid of it is to once again try to uninstall it but after what happened the first time frankly i'm not too keen to do that ....what about the 2nd idea - go to Store & click 'download' ...is the idea of doing that is to 'pretend' you want the update -download it and then just let it 'sit' on desktop but not 'install' /or to click on ''i don't agree' before the download begins (hoping one or both with stop that popup? thanks
