What are your thoughts on windows update KB2973544?

KB2973544 is the one that supposedly forces windows 8 users to upgrade to 8.1. People who already have 8.1 probably didn't get this update, and I read that not all windows 8 users get this update, and it comes out in small batches at different times.

I am not really looking for any help here as it is already too late for me, but I want this thread to be a discussion about Microsoft's tactic to use this update to get people to use 8.1 without their consent.

I also heard that some people would rather still use 8 over 8.1 for their own reasons, or maybe wait until 8.1 known ot be more stable on their hardware.

So what are your thoughts? Microsoft doing the right thing to promote 8.1 or do you think this is a low blow?

Good thing. There are a tiny number of people who can run 8 but not 8.1 (due to rather old processors) but in any other case 8.1 is better. It just is.

You may not be aware but if you run a server and people download things you have to pay. If they download more you pay more. This applies to absolutely everyone. Including Microsoft.

It isn't free for them or forced on you. Just better.

And yes you are a bit late to be discussing it.

was there supposed to be a thread discussing this somewhere?

I also forgot to mention. I want facts this time. Was this update sent out at the same time to everybody running windows 8, or was it sent out to some people, and then some other people later, and then some people later etc?

What facts are you after? Would you like to know how to search for a thread or you have a new question?

If you only want to read about KBxxx and only on eightforums then put site:www.eightforums.com KBxxx into Google.

The release of Windows updates are spread out over some period of time. The details have not been published. This prevents millions of computers from hitting on Microsoft's servers at the same time and overwhelming them.

Even so, do you think it is a good idea for them to force 8.1 upon 8 users, or do you feel that users have the right to decide when to upgrade to 8.1, or not upgrade it at all?

I thought PC was supposed to mean Personal Computer?

This one is another new for me. How is this possible, users are downloading from your servers & someone will pay you for the help right? Or am I wrong, could you tell me how?

The way you ask these questions... It's obvious you expect us to agree with you. The truth is if you really don't want the upgrade it's still possible to stay on 8. If you want the "right to decide", then you only need enough technical knowledge to enforce it.

All the KB updates have links that you can consult before downloading/installing. At worst you can google them in your browser.
So users only have problems if they blindly check everything in Windows Update without consulting beforehand, or turn on automatic updates. Noone forces you to install anything, you still have the option to uncheck anything you don't want.

But... It takes time to get information on each update, and it's much less convenient to have to manually update. That's the price you pay for control of your "personal" computer. Just don't expect Microsoft to babysit you when you decide to be in a minor niche willingly staying on a soon unsupported (2015 iirc ?) version.

"Forced" may be a bit harsh - they cannot force anyone to do anything - "coerce" yes ... either way many are still running XP, and no reason to upgrade other than for (very valid) reasons already given on this forum....

To answer your question(s):
"promote 8.1" = Yes
"do you think this is a low blow?
" = No

BTW: Windows 8.0 end of support is Jan 2016.

IMHO the update was misrepresented. When you look at the description of the update inside of Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update it claims to "resolve a issue in windows...", But when you read the KB Article and it says "If you have Automatic Updates enabled on a computer that is running Windows RT or Windows 8 and that has update 2871389 installed, this update can automatically start the update process to Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1"

If MS put the information into the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update that the update would auto update to 8.1 it would have been nice instead of trying to hide it from the masses.

I have specific application that do not work on 8.1 and will use 8.0 until I can get a replacement application or can get those specific apps to work in 8.1

I purchased 3 identical laptops for wife and kids. 1 was upgraded to 8.1 with a lot of problems that took a while to fix. So I decided not to upgrade the other 2 and told my kids to reject the upgrade. every one is happy .
