Solved Disk Cleanup hangs trying to do 'Windows Update Cleanup'.

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Suggestions anyone?

Having or still having an issue with Updating Windows ? Try this Fix Windows Update Error messages and other Windows Update issues Link on this page, run it.

Did you ever try a chdsk first, then the scannow and then the dism ?

From the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r
again from the elevated command prompt, type:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

then run: sfc /scannow

Look at this post, same issue http://www.eightforums.com/performa...k-clean-up-windows-update-clean-up-stuck.html

@Nuccii: Yes, that is the procedure I am using.

@jds63: When I do chkdsk, I get 'Cannot lock current drive' and 'Chkdsk cannot run because the vol. is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule ... the next time the system restarts?' Is that what you want me to do? Also, I have looked at Disk Clean-up - Windows Update Clean-up Stuck. That's where I got the suggestions that I have tried so far (scannow & dism). Also, are you specifically asking me to run chkdsk, then dism, then scannow in that order? As I said in my original post, I have run scannow and dism (in that order), but they didn't help with the Disk Cleanup hanging problem.

O.k. so apparently there is no problems with Windows updates.

Yes in that exact order, chkdsk, scannow and then dism, exactly as shown. Yes you have to schedule it for a next restart always.
Unless you just perform a scan for errors under Windows, in disk properties under tools. But i feel this is not efficient enough.
Will take time to run chkdsk first. Won't hurt to run it anyway, as should be done at times.

That order helped me with a issue of system restore not working.

OK, will do. In your first post, you first said chkdsk, scannow, dism. Then you said chkdsk, dism, scannow. Now you are saying CSD again, which I assume is indeed the order you want.

I'm not going to run any of these until tmw., because the notebook I have is slow as molasses in January.

First post # 3 i said chkdsk, dism then scannow the order i originally stated. That is the correct way. Second #5 posting is were i had it wrong, sorry about the confusion.

Well chkdsk will take some time on any PC.

Do you have another issue causing it to be slow ? If so explain it more, see if we can help you on that too.

Well, I ran them in the order you said 1st and 3d (CSD), not 2nd & 4th (CDS). I have a 300GB drive on my underpowered HP notebook. Chkdsk took about 110 min. (no errors of consequence). Scannow took about 50 min. (no errors). Dism took about 35 min. (no errors of consequence). Then I ran Disk Cleanup again. It said I could save 9 MB on the Windows update cleanup (no change from the last time.) I ran it. By examining the slider bar closely, I could see it was making minuscule progress, so I let it creep on. It finally completed in 4.5 hours. I had Disk Cleanup run another check. It still said I could save 9M on the Windows update cleanup. So for all of my efforts I have gained precisely nothing.

This looks like a MS problem to me. What is the best way to bring it to their attention that won't cost me any money?

I am sorry things still not worked out. You never answered if you did have any issues with Windows Update.

I know chkdsk takes long, but is kind of odd for scan disk and dism to take that long. This makes me wonder if there is more to this then disk cleanup hanging. Plus you also mentioned slowness of this laptop in general.

For cleaning Windows Update i myself find Disk Cleanup to be slow too, sure not as slow as you are mentioning. It should work though, not to say there is nothing wrong with yours. Windows update files temps can be removed by going to c:\windows\softwaredistributions\downloads folder, select all and delete. Not a cure for your problem just a way to do it.

CCleaner good program too http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

For starters all i know is you have Windows 8.1 on a laptop. But which model laptop, how old is it, any warranty on it still ?

Going to Microsoft is not that easy, i have went this way at times, once for Windows Media player issue other for Microsoft Office 2013. Was not that overly satisfied, although there staff was very courteous. You can either talk to them online or on the phone. Could talk to your own manufacturer of the laptop.

Ever think of doing a refresh or reset of Windows 8.1. Does it have a recovery partition ? Do you have a copy of Windows 8 disc.
Try repair disk too.

I've never had a problem with Windows Update, except (as described above) when I troubleshoot and fix, it always says it 'fixed the problem'. I tried this on my Dell desktop too, with the same results--always a problem and always fixed. Other people on the web report similar behavior. Update itself works fine.

I'll try Ccleaner in a few days--I have used it before. I usually do my own manual deletes of files that Ccleaner suggests, so I can get them back if need be. I'll try deleting from softwaredistributions\downloads myself if Ccleaner doesn't point me there first. I'll report how all that turns out.

My laptop is HP
2000-2b80dx. It's no longer under warranty (about 16 mos. old). I have a recovery partition and backup DVDs for the OS, but they are all W8, and I don't feel like reinstalling 8.1 and all the updates for a problem this minor.

So many people on the web have reported problems similar to mine with Windows Update Cleanup that I strongly suspect MS is at fault here. But getting them to address the issue is a different matter. Guess I'll forget about that.

Thanks for all your help.

Your welcome. I last recommended a windows 8.1 refresh, this would be the easiest without effecting any of the programs you put on after the installation of Windows 8.1 update.

Doing this in case any missing or corrupted files, even though you ran other stuff like scan disk and chkdsk.
I myself found it very slow to clean up the disk, but eventually finishes.

So at times i go to the folder where it places windows updates and remove them there. CCleaner will not find these unless put them in the recycle bin first.

Always make sure updates are working fine first, before deleting temps.
Make restore points regularly.

Right, I mistakenly thought Ccleaner cleaned up Windows Updates, but I see it doesn't. But softwaredistribution\download contains only 116 KB, not worth fooling with. I now have no idea where are the 9 MB of data that Disk Cleanup, Windows Update Cleanup claims it can recover, but failed to do after completing its run of 4.5 hours ydy. (BTW, that was the only box in Disk Cleanup that I checked when I ran it.) Also, I had Disk Cleanup check again today after a shutdown, hoping that maybe things might have straightened out, but alas, it still says 9 MB recoverable from WUC.

As i believe i posted a eight-forum article some updates take number of days before disk cleanup will remove them.
No don't clean softwaredistribution every time right away, untill all is good with updates put in, some of these are app updates i believe also.

Disk cleanup does not always check everthing, go down the list make sure everything you want to remove is checked.
You do click the setting "clean up system files" also ?

Scroll down i nccleaner it does have advanced cleanup option for other stuff, be careful on those.

I had already cleaned everything else I wanted to with Disk Cleaner--don't know how many times I've run it recently. Lately I've just checked the one box to make its work as light as possible for test purposes. Yes, I had seen somewhere that it won't remove some of the update stuff until a week has passed, but why would it include such items in the cleanable list at all? And why does it take 4.5 hours to process 9 MB, even if that stuff was mistakenly included in the list? BTW, it doesn't put Windows Update Cleanup in the list at all until you have checked 'clean up system files'. It prepares a preliminary list first, sans WUC, then you can check the 'system files' box, and it will prepare a more complete list that includes WUC. The entire list prep. process takes approx. 10 min. on my clunky laptop.

Yes i believe we posted it here about Windows cleaning up Windows update after 7 days in a link, look back. Now i can not explain why it will list stuff there it can not clean up yet, something i do not know why, Microsoft might. Yes i believe i asked did you click "Cleanup system files" that will look for updates and old backup install files of windows. Other stuff it regularly find you see,Dump files,Temp internet, recycle bin, etc...

Is this your laptop exactly HP 2000-2b80DX Notebook PC Product Specifications HP 2000-2b80DX Notebook PC | HP® Support

How is this laptop running in other ways besides this Disk Cleanup issue ?
As i look at the specs if this is right, 1.3GHZ is not fast for Windows 8.1, even though requirements say 1GHZ or higher.
What else is running on laptop and loading at startup ? How much RAM ?. Do you update drivers ?
Do other regular maintenance, defrag. ? Just wondering how it is performing lately considering you use the word clunky a lot.

I have a ASUS Vivo Tab Smart tablet with a Intel® Atom™ Z2760 Dual-core CPU @ 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM and 64GB drive space.

My point is this i know being a tablet, but processor bit higher runs disk cleanup very slow, even come across problems like yours were it took hours to complete i had to stop it.
Now as far as i know, i never read of any problems with Disk Cleanup in Windows 8 or 8.1, but even on my faster desktop it definitely uses some resource, i notice my fans will run a bit faster, CPU gets a bit warmer at times, during it's process.

Again my point is, some of it may be due to the system you have, rest due to the process itself, either bugs in it, i am not aware of, maybe someone else.

Why i did suggest a Windows 8.1 refresh to see if it does help you in anyway, you will not loose anything doing it.

Now i feel your frustrations with this and want it resolved, there are alternatives to disk cleanup as i showed, CCleaner and going to source folders and delete them if you want to.

Yes, that is my laptop.

I'll be disabling one or two Startup programs over the next few days, leaving only a couple enabled (AMD Catalyst Control Center & HP Message Service).

I'll try Disk Cleanup again the next time I do maintenance, which is every 3 months or so. (I don't use the laptop very much.) Maybe WUC will heal itself or at least get rid of most of the old stuff. 9 MB isn't much, for sure. I think there may have been a lot more than that a few days ago, but I'm not certain.

I'm reluctant to do a refresh. MS says "If you upgraded your PC to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 with a DVD, use that disc. If you don’t have Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 media, contact Microsoft Support." That's my situation. I prefer not to open that can of worms unless I have to. Seems like asking for trouble. My system is working as well as it ever has, except for this WUC problem, which is fairly minor as it stands now.

Thanks again for all your help.

It's been 11 days since the last Windows Update, so I thought I'd try Disk Cleanup again. It takes about 2 min. to do the basic analysis and about 9 more min. to do the 'Cleanup System Files' analysis. It still reported the 9 MB in Windows Update Cleanup. I asked it to clear that. This time it was done in seconds, instead of 4.5 hours. I rebooted and checked DC again. Still said 9 MB in WUC. I asked it again to clear it. Done in seconds. Rebooted. Checked DC. Still 9 MB in WUC.

I did a DC on my Dell desktop computer today. Said 134 MB for WUC. Told it to clear the files. Took > 20 min. Checked DC again. Said 9 MB for WUC. Told it to clear files. Done in seconds. Checked DC again. Still 9 MB in WUC.

Conclusion: It is impossible to completely clear the WUC files, but it will clear most of them, though it takes quite a long time to do it. Behavior is similar for both my computers, though the desktop is a much faster machine.

has anyone tried this and had any trouble since?

just found this because i am having the EXACT same issue and have wasted more time than i care to admit trying to fix it. Same thing 9mb windows update, hangs while cleaning said files. Well it doesnt hang but its stuck without proceeding what seems to be perpetually.

I tried it on a different PC and it went through just fine so im unsure if its my pc or what.

I do use ccleaner so its an issue based on principal alone. Im extremely anal and particular about my PC and when i find something (VERY SELDOM) that doesnt work, i obsess over it until its fixed. In this case its got me stumped :(

I have done several windows update repairs, and have cleaned the /software/downloads and appdata/../temp and windows/temp folders manually.

I dont want to do a full dism due to the fact it will replace all the windows bloatware and potentially wreak havoc on the registry tweaks ive spent time implementing.

Long story short - if anyone can or has pinpointed the EXACT cause of this darn issue i would be beyond grateful. SMH :(
