    I actually gained one additional thing during all this messing around with this - my DISM has started working correctly - not sure why or how, but I got a bonus as I had been trying to correct that for quite some time also.

    Well no need of any apology, we all learnt about app readiness tool needed for update to work , at least me I don't know how it delays start up, I don't think it is causing any delays for me.

    Glad you got it sorted, John....

    I was thinking of writing a tool to sift through the windowsupdate.log file and retrieve errors - but that thing is so cryptic...I'm not sure it would be much use...

    When errors happen, it might be good to check services - Brink has a tutorial which sets services back to default: Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 8

    And, Black Viper's site is helpful also.
