    Windows 8 activation, new hardware

OK so I am trying to activate Windows 8.1. I have a mac, and this is different hardware than the first installation.

I was given these instructions to activate on my old machine.

For any Product Key activation issues ,

phone Activation Method could be tried :

Type-in "slui 4" without the quotes in the run box and follow the instructions.

    For error 0XC004F061 :

Type-in "regedit" in the run box without quotes , access the location :

Setup\OOBE and on the right pane , right-click on MediaBootInstall and change the value from 1 to 0.

Run the command prompt in administrator mode , and execute the command "slmgr -rearm".

restart the computer and try to check for the activation status and if still not activated , try to activate again.

Is it possible to activate, given I have a new computer, without calling Windows?

edit: in the registry OOBE directory I created a new file called MediaBootInstall, all to no cigar.

What sort of key do you have? I have a retail key (an upgrade from 7 ultimate to 8 Pro) and did not have to do any of that when installing on my Mac. I just installed 8.1 using the generic key and then activated by typing in the upgrade key on the "Activate Windows" screen.

Thank God there are other mac users I thought I was shunned.

Yea I bought the damn cd, and it was the wrong version, hence Microsofts manual upgrade and this scenario.

Probably need to call thanks for the response.

I found installing quite complex as Windows 8 was not supported and my superdrive is bust (I've got a 2006 MacBook Pro) but after getting it installed the activation was no problem.

In case you have problems installing what I did (that worked) was:
    1. Create a partition for Windows using disk utility and format FAT32.
    2. Install VirtualBox on mac.
    3. Install rEFInd
    4. Install NTFS 3G
    5. Attach the new partition as a raw disk in VirtualBox
    6. Install Windows to it (through VirtualBox) and power off VM at the first reboot.
    7. Delete everything from the Windows partition.
    8. Unzip and copy the contents of your Windows ISO to the Windows partition
    9. Reboot and select the Windows partition from rEFInd
    10. Install Windows again
    11. Delete all the folders that were in the ISO from the C: drive
    12. Install bootcamp drivers on Windows (I had to use version 3 and run the setup under compatibility settings for Vista)

Anyway if you have any problems just ask. Interestingly under windows my MacBook runs about 10 degrees cooler and the ATI graphics work. Under lion (and snow leopard) I had to disable all the ATI extensions as it would always overheat, give me weird artifacts and then freeze.

I understand what is disseminated but that is not the situation.

Probably have to call them. Again.

    Next time I'll download.

Yes, you will have to explain to them that you want to transfer the licence to new hardware.

The MediaBootInstall trick was merely to install with an upgrade key but, as Adam pointed out, that can be done with a generic key and the upgrade key used to activate.

Let us know what they say. Good luck.
