From Refresh to latest

Win 8, Asus SE200 notebook

Having just performed a refresh to finally rid myself of a corrupt component store (after many efforts, fixes and different error codes), and having Auto Updates set to 'never', I've been manually checking for updates this morning.

407 important updates have been installed and all seems well. The last update installed (by kb#) is 2993651, which I know is a replacement for previous flawed updates (these flawed updates weren't installed, since I only started updating this morning).

So I'm wondering why I haven't been offered the 8.1 update yet? Are there later updates that are required on the system in order for 8.1 to be offered?

More important, I think, is the question: Should I allow the upgrade to 8.1, or is it more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks!

Go for it. If all your updates are installed go to the Window Store to acquire your Windows 8.1 update.

Now that your Windows is running without any flaw. I strongly recommend:
  1. Turn Windows Updates on and select: Check for updates but let me decide to download and install
  2. Make sure that Windows Updates is currently not updating, go to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
and delete everything in this folder. Those are your 407 downloaded updates and you no longer need it, this will free up a few GB's for you.
  3. Certain updates have to happened before you are being offered to upgrade to 8.1 so keep checking for updates until you receive a message: no more updates available.
  4. Open the Windows Store, you might get the offer to upgrade but before upgrading to 8.1, use what I suggest in this post to create a backup image: http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/52894-system-image-won-t-work.html#post422014
  5. When you are ready to upgrade to 8.1:
Win+R->msconfig, in the services tab, check on Hide all Microsoft services and disable all non Microsoft services.
  6. Disable any third party Anti Virus software
  7. From Admin Command Prompt, rerun:
    - dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    - sfc /scannow
  8. Update to 8.1, you should not have any problem.

Hello again, topgun. All good tips, thanks. As for the system image, I've been creating them (with Acronis TI) in-between update clusters to minimize efforts should an update go south.

I just restarted after 2 optional updates (atheros Qualcomm Adptr and and Asus wireless Radio Control) and windows initiated a chkdsk. The log states it repaired some index entries and free space allocations. I'll continue with the remaining optional updates to see what happens (and run chkdsk).
