0xC004F012 after "disk repair"

Hello and welcome,

Today my beloved Win 8.1 gave me a surprising license deactivation, meaning the license just suddenly became void despite working properly for some few months. I suspect two reasons:

- I changed GPU the day before (but it's not like the problem occurred right after changing GPU)
- during system boot right before occurrence of the issue Windows was performing (routine?) HDD autorepair. This could suggest that some system files were damaged in the process. My only drive is an OCZ Vector SSD.

Obviously, my license is genuine.

I did try slui.exe 4 - nothing loads after selecting region. The loading icon just keeps running. I also tried sfc /scannow. It said some files were corrupted which could not be repaired. I'm attaching the log file. I also tried performing autorepair from Windows CD - to no avail. I also ran the MGADiag I found somewhere, but this version seems incompatible with 8.1, as it says "Validation unsupported OS".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know if buying a new license key (which I obviously would like to avoid) would work for me. An activation suddenly disappearing is just so... windows...

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately this didn't work. The second command did claim to have repaired something, but the problem persists. Attaching diag report.

Btw. the 8.1 I'm running is an upgrade from Win 7. By no means am I giving up yet, but if I bought a valid 8.1 full unlock key from eBay, would it work with my upgrade copy?

I was unable to open your Diagnostic Report.

You can change the key at any time with the version of Windows you have installed.

Windows is seeing your key as not valid. It may be due to the hardware change, though unlikely if only graphics card changed.

Run Display_Licence_Info to see event log errors.

OK, silly me. So, the report file indicates an error 0x80070426 which stands for "service disabled".

Ok, so I'm getting the same error as the guy in the topic.. Error 5, access denied. The run type (or whatever - I have a Polish version of the OS) says "Automatic (delayed start, freed/released ((?)) start).

Does that mean that the dreaded HDD formatting is my last resort?

No if you have a restore point prior to the deactivation, you can do that but needs to be started from the install media via the repair thingy.

Restore point? Do these set up automatically? I don't think I ever enabled one.

Anyway, I've been trying to see if I can do a registry fix suggested somewhere here: Solved SPPSVC service not running as well as activating Windows, but I can't find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr in my registry at all... Is this even applicable to Win 8?

I only have a "sppsvc" folder

You can check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sppsvc instead

Have you checked for a restore point? Run rstrui.exe.

I tried a restore, didn't help - the restore point was too late...

I posted a screenshot in my previous comment with the status of my sppsvc registry - could you tell me which item am I supposed to change?

It's not the actual reg key that's the issue, rather the permissions granted to each component that is confusing Active directory.

Did you try the restore from the setup disk?

Anyway check the setup of each of these components:

sppsvc.exe:
Untitled.png

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sppsvc
Untitled1.png

Software Protection service: (The same applies to Remote Procedure Call service, which must be running)
Untitled2.png

Software Protection scheduled task:

Untitled3.png

If those check out..

Run command prompt as Administrator and enter the following:

cd %windir%\System32\spp\store\2.0
rename tokens.dat tokens.bak
cd %windir%\system32
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

How do you access the SvcRestartTask? Through the Task Scheduler? I did Google it but can't find anything. Pardon my ignorance but I've never done that before. And my Polish version of the OS doesn't help.

And what do you mean a restore from the setup disk? The Windows installer CD? I did try the repair function. Does the restore there utilize different restore points than those stored on your HDD?

Search Task Scheduler - expand each node and scroll down to SoftwareProtectionPlatform...

Only restore points are on the HDD.. as you have run it from the CD, perhaps you are SOL :(

I have been down this road with permissions changes - was hoping you would have more luck...

I set the task to run on highest priority and constantly. Rebooted the PC and the system performed HDD autorepair again. I don't even know if this is related, I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but what I know is that I'm gonna have to do a f****g disk formatting this weekend.

Thanks Microsoft.

Unfortunately that would be best.. with their clamp down on piracy they have made WAT extremely complicated - just remember to do a backup once all apps etc installed. Good luck - let us know how it goes...
