What's with the Windows Defender Updates?

So the first thing I did with Surface Pro 3 was run all the updates. I would actually have to go back to the previous menu, and back into the update section to recheck for updates. All until I could reboot, and there were no more updates available.

So ever since then, I have been getting new update messages almost every day. And it's always a Windows Defender update. Which I don't even use. I haven't installed Malware Bytes yet. I don't know if doing so will fix this so that I no longer get informed that I have new updates when it's just Defender.

Anyway, I'm thinking of just turning off the automatic check because of this. The whole reason I have it on is so that Windows can check for updates automatically, and let me know when I have actual new updates to download. However, I don't care about Defender updates. I need to fix it so that it will only tell me when there's actual new updates that has nothing to do with Defender. And stop telling me that I have new updates when it's just for worthless Defender.

Every piece of anti virus software will have its own database definition to keep a list of known malware, spyware, virus etc... Since new virus, malware etc... are created every day. They will have to update their definition to include them.

Windows defender is no different. If you don't want to see the reminder message, you can open the Services and turn off Windows Defender (not advisable) or you can set Windows Updates to automatically download and install the updates silently.

Thanks. My plan in the first place was to disable Defender in services. I always do that whenever I install Windows. Disable Defender and Windows Firewall. Then, install real security software. I just haven't had the time to do it yet. Been so busy. Then I ended up getting stuck on the MS Sudoku which was like the only game that came with the Surface.

So your saying that these constant Defender updates aren't a fluke? Meaning that it will continue to update?

And that as long as I disable Defender, it should stop Windows from trying to update Defender?

Correct, it is not a fluke.

Yes it will. The updates is being checked by Windows Defender Service and by turning it off you might get another nag from Windows that you have no Anti Virus Protection.

    EDIT:
    install real security software
Sorry but there's no such thing as real security software. If you install a third party anti virus software such as Mcaffee, Norton etc... They will also have their own definition database and would require you to update and depend on how up to date their database, new virus, malware etc... still sneak into your system. In addition, third party anti virus software are also known to cause BSOD's

    Thank you.

I'm fine with updates from security software that I actually plan to use. I just didn't want Defender to update since I planned to not use it. I'm going to be installing Avast, MalwayreBytes, and Online Armor.

Norton, McAfee, and other similar ones are viruses in themselves. So anybody getting BSOD is installing retarded security software. Even AVG started out great, but ended up going downhill after a few years.

Like that combination of security SW. Avast I set to Gaming mode so it does not show updates 5 or more times a day. Set like that, it's almost invisible and shows up only when something is found but still on guard and gets all updates.
