How are updates for Flash player and PDF reader delivered

Seeing as W8.1 has "Flash Player" and a PDF reader as part of the OS I wondered how updates for these are delivered. Are they delivered via the normal Windows Update channel or are they as before (in W7/Vista) where the application/s are non OS related and updates are via the appropriate companies own update system ?

I think Flash for Internet Explorer are through Windows Update.

    Otherwise---

    Hello David,
The link you gave is for the Shockwave Player, not for the flash player. The link below is to test your Flash Player: Adobe Find Flash version

Here's some info about Flash Player and Shockwave: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/769607

For most of us, we only need Flash Player.

That's interesting. The Flash Player page says that it is pre-installed with W8. I had a look in "control panel" and found there is the normal Flash Player "icon" installed, however opening that and looking at the advanced tab shows the update settings to be greyed out and set by default to "notify me". So it seems that it is Windows Update dependent.

True for IE in the form of KB######. For other browsers, you need to download the software and install it.

Thanks Folks. That is was WU dependent was what I was after confirming.

I'm used to running Vista and W7 with Windows set to notify only, however that setting doesn't seem to play nicely with W8.1 in that Defender then will not automatically update (unlike the standard Security Essentials in W7).

Shockwave is needed on certain sites.
It doesn't hurt to install it.
