I'm used to running Vista and W7 with Windows set to notify only, however that setting doesn't seem to play nicely with W8.1 in that Defender then will not automatically update (unlike the standard Security Essentials in W7).
You can create a scheduled task to update Windows Defender definition updates.
That way you can have all other updates set to notify only, and the definition updates get installed automatically.

How do you set up auto update for Reader or even check for updates manually? In Win 7 it is its own program and it is easy enough to access those features but I can't figure it out in Win 8.1.

I don't see any way to get to those features in Reader in 8.1.

What you show appears to be the Adobe Reader program separately installed. I am asking about (as I believe was the OP) the Reader app that comes installed in Windows 8 (and 8.1).

I see no way to access those features which you show. I can easily find those features in the program on my Win 7 machine, since the program was installed. Not in the Reader app.

That is something I shall definitely look into. I didn't realise I could do that. Thanks.

And look into how to do it I did and I now have Defender updating at every boot but with a 15 minute delay which seemed a sensible value for things to settle down first.

    Thanks David.
