When I search for updates with windows update it finds the drivers I want but it gives me an error message whenever I try to install them.

I already tried downloading the latest windows update (when I install it, it says the update was succesful and asks me to restart, but when I search again after restarting the update shows up again and lets me install it again).

I also tried deleting and renaming my software distribution folder and using the windows troubleshooting program.

Overall I'm not really too fussed about most of the things it's trying to install apart from the drivers for the wireless reciever for my xbox controller as it won't work without them. When I try to install the driver files through device manager it gives me this error message

my main reason for mentioning the windows update problem is that I assume the problems are linked as the wireless reciever works perfectly on my laptop. Up to about a week ago it also worked perfectly on this computer using the same usb port that it uses now.

As you can see, on the 19th, it suddenly began to say "NULL DRIVER". I checked my system restore and it tells me that I installed a windows update on that day just before it suddenly stopped working. I tried reverting back to this restore point (before the update) and nothing had changed, the device still would not work.

If anyone has any suggestions or would like more information just respond to this thread. Thank you.

Hey mate, I recommend going to the hardware manufacturer's website to obtain drivers. Sometimes they have more up-to-date/stable drivers available that MS hasn't released yet (actually, often). It is the safest place to ensure you are getting the right driver, as well. I've had too many problems with driver updates from windows update, so I recommend turning off updating drivers (but keeping windows update automatic!).

In addition, make sure all your drivers and BIOS are up-to-date from the motherboard manufacturer's website. I believe you have a Asus P8-Z77-LX2, so you should find all of that here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download -select the correct OS (ie Windows 8.1 x64), and have at it.

Already tried all this. I'll just leave the thread open incase anyone can relate to my problem.

I believe the question of emails is against Forum Rules

No, he meant that he would get an email about a reply to this thread. A notice from the forum, if you will ;)

haha sorry, didn't mean to be rude. Thanks for the suggestions.

It would be really cool if you explain it anyway, just in case. If nothing else, it helps me to learn so I can help others more efficiently in the future. If you've got the time. :D
