Failure configuring Windows updates/ reverting changes/

I've been stuck on this screen for awhile now and its quite annoying. I just got this laptop about a week ago and haven't really done much on it. I recently did put a whole bunch of pictures on it though that I really don't want to lose, that would be really terrible really. Anyway, this screen won't go away, all I did was try to update it to Windows 8.1 cause a message popped up saying to do that from the computer settings button that you find on the charm bar. I did try turning it off and on because another forum said that that worked for them. Then after restarting it came right back to this screen. But I literally can't do anything because it's stuck on this screen! Any advice?

I hope that you still have the backup of your pictures.

Your problem is not very clear, it looks like you are talking about two different things. There is no popup that will tell you to update to Windows 8.1 by "saying to do that by the computer settings in the charms bar", it just isn't done that way.

The best bet would be to use the recovery partition in your computer to reset to original factory conditions, see your computer manual on how to proceed.

When done install all the windows updates then go to the Windows Store to get and install the Windows 8.1 update.

Yes, that update thing is what I tried to do.

Because I went to the store, and clicked a button that said "Windows 8.1" over top of it.
After doing this, a thing popped up that said "Before you can get Windows 8.1 from the store you need to you need to install all the latest updates from Windows Updates// Go to settings, tap Change PC settings, tap Windows updates, tap Check for Updates now, and install any available updates"

So it was after did that last step, that it started to update and led to the screen it was stuck on.

However, I did leave my laptop on over the night and by morning it was back to normal - but now a new question.

How can I get this update without it doing it again, and reverting any changes it tried to make?

And thank you for the reply

If all Windows 8 update have been installed. Follow this tutorial (Option 1)to be sure that all Win 8 updates have been installed

Windows Update - Check for and Install in Windows 8

If all is OK then you can go to the Windows Store to get the Windows 8.1 update. Follow Option one from this tutorial

    You should have no problems.

I purchased this Lenovo ideapad Z580 with inbuilt windows 8 in 2012 while I was in New York. I came for a visit to India 3 months ago and find windows 8 not updating at all! It pisses me off to see the screen with an automatic restart loop for about half an hour!! Still with an error message "Failure configuring windows updates/reverting changes" and the whole process starts all over again! I searched for numerous threads to find a permanent solution to this prob...tried system restore, refreshing...& what not...but all invain!! Now I think the ultimate thing is reinstalling windows 8. But, m again unsure if reinstalling it which is provided in the "change PC settings" section would do any wonder! I remember, I once changed the time settings after landing in India and found the problem started after that! I consequently changed the time back to the Eastern time for New York, but the problem still persists! What should I do now?

When you changed the time did you also change the Region?

Use the Troubleshooter for Windows Update in the Control Panel.

Run the sfc /scannow command in the elevated command prompt, if unable to fix all system file corruption run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth then the sfc command again.

If all else fails use the recovery partition in your computer to reset to original Factory conditions. Don't forget to back up your data before doing so. The link shows how to do on a Lenovo computer.

When you used Windows update to get your system to the point where you could do the upgrade to 8.1 from the Store, how many updates were there?

The reason I ask is because I just went thru this with a system I was setting up for someone. There were 85 updates and it took several hours. Got to installing the 85th update and I got the message about failure and reverting. After that, I did the updates in chunks, figuring it would be easier troubleshooting the failure of a smaller set of updates. I tried just the first 15, they installed fine. Then went back and did the next 25 which installed fine. Finally went back and installed the last chunk of them. When I did them in chunks like that they all installed fine.

Once those updates were completed, I was then able to go into the Store and do the update to 8.1.
