    This Weeks Update (June10?) Failure

When I rebooted just now there were (i think) 13 updates Win (8.1u1) wanted to install. I've rebooted several times since Tuesday but this time was the first any update mention was made. All seemed normal, and eventually I was back to the lock screen and my password was accepted just fine. But rather than going to the desktop, i get a black screen. Once i move the mouse i get a cursor as well but cannot get past this screen. Ctl+alt+del gets the dialog up and selecting task mgr i briefly see tskman window but back to black screen in milliseconds.

    Same result after several tries.

Win+x (or anything else) does nothing.

Tried holing shift while clicking restart from lock screen and I get advanced startup but neither safe mode nor sys restore work...it reboots and hangs before lock screen in each case.

    ANYONE?????

JUST tried using command prompt option from adv startup and upon reboot getting a bit of hdd activity then it hangs--without getting to even send a video signal, meaning the monitor is still in standby mode.

Actually it turns out my primary display died! Trouble is, I can't convince windows it's not there. I've tried everything. Currently have reverted to on board VGA and removed the NVIDIA card. If I boot into safe mode it will use the working monitor t as soon as I try a real boot, I get the login screen on the display but black screen and cursor after password. I'm seriously about to format and reinstall. Happy Friday the freakin thirteenth!

Uh, Friday 13, you had to remind me, eh. Resolution and/or frequency is probably wrong, maybe driver too. Can you make it lower while in safe mode and than boot "for real" ?

It really is/was the monitor. It had been sketchy for a while anyway (and old Samsum Syncmaster400P I picked up for free) anyway, I've at least gotten a work-around going, and that is from safe mode I was able to find and install a copy of DisplayFusion, and in its setting selected one of the options "Force ALL windows onto current monitor" voila! I'm baaaack....and can pick up working...having lost the last 8 hours.

In my frustration (ok, I admit, ANGER) I ripped the GTX 550 Ti out and basically dismantled its fan/shroud because it was so dirty--and of course can't put it back in until the shops open and I can pick up some heat sink grease. I just never ends.

I've run into a similar issue recently - first on Thursday (did a system restore to before I installed a program the day before, and everything worked fine) then again this morning (after the updates reinstalled themselves again).

Looking through the system log, I see two items that could possibly point to the cause of this:

The UMDF reflector was unable to complete startup because the WUDFPf service was not found. This service may be started later during boot, at which point Windows will attempt to start the device again.
    And
The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ROOT\LENOVOVHID\0000.
On Thursday, at the advice of a friend, I booted into Safe Mode and updated the video driver, but this did not solve the problem. When I rebooted again, I got an error message relating to WinSAPI.exe and still got a blank screen with a cursor. Trying to run task manager just resulted in it briefly appearing (and not responding) before disappearing again.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can resolve this? Windows Update last night listed a bunch of cumulative security updates and installed 7 updates when I shut down.

So nobody has any suggestions on this? I've gotten around it for now by telling Windows to let me decide when to install updates, but I don't like not having the latest updates installed.

Did you get drivers for video card straight from Intel ? Like from here : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...+Graphics+4000

Yes, I got them directly from Intel's website. I also tried downloading it from Lenovo's website. Everything works fine if I boot into safe mode, but of course you can't access Windows Update from Safe Mode so I can't actually uninstall the updates without doing a system restore.
