This update failure has occurred 5 times in the past three days on 32 bit system. My Win 8 update was purchased from MS in Nov. 2013 and installed then. During this recent update process I have updated Nividia card w/latest 32bit drivers and updated motherboard Intel chipset. This morning I ran SFC and found no integrity violations. DISM /restorehealth and /componentcleanup repaired and all OK. Still failed. Have read Barnacle's post and find 5 updates he mentions are missing. Need help getting them, if needed, and having problems doing so. Other guidance and suggestions appreciated.

I suggest before running update:
  1. Delete everything under: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
  2. Disable completely any anti virus software
  3. Task Manager -> Startup and disable everything in this tab.
  4. Win+X->Run and type: msconfig. On services tab, tick on: Hide all all Microsoft services then tap on Disable all
  5. Perform step 2 from this link: AUTOCHK Initiation Countdown Time - Change - Windows 7 Help Forums (the default in Windows 8 set to 1) then run: chkdsk C: /r <===== This may take a while to complete.
  6. Run Update.

Followed every step and complied with instructions. Even used Win Key +R. No problems, lengthy chkdsk run as expected. Verified MS Essentials not running. Started Win 8.1 update from MS store. Ran smoothly until 83% when it quit and reverted to restoring previous version. Missing something somewhere apparently. What might I try next? Thanks very much for your interest and help.

Have you checked if you have the latest BIOS firmware for your MB ?
The last resource would be to backup your data then do a Refresh then update.

Again, thanks for the suggestions and directions. I followed those and the ones I found at win8.1 update error 0xc1900101 - 0x2000a reboot a 84% - Microsoft Community and now have 8.1 up and running perfectly. I have a feeling, as did another, that dealing with the 'old windows' file played a part in the success. Probably the application of all was necessary as well. I hope that this helps others. 8.1 would not install due to two consistent errors - 0xC1900101-0x2000A. Stymied me and others and found the solution mentioned above just today. All installed and working now. Thanks.
