    Windows 8.1 expiring but won't accept product key?


    Hi, got a message yesterday on my windows 8.1 laptop saying my windows is expiring in a couple of weeks and I need to put in a product key to renew it. So I found my product key and put i tin and it won't work? It says it can't be accepted and to use another one?

    It was originally a windows 8 but I did the update to make it an 8.1.

    Anyone able to help?

    You might see if you may be able to activate by phone instead.

    Hi, thanks for replying.

    What I can't understand is that my laptop came with it pre-installed and it has been fine for months, why now?

    Also is says it knows the key but still won't accept it?

    I'll give the phone way a go.

    Are you signed in to an administrator account?

    Were you able to call and talk to an activation operator to see what they said?

    I assume yes because I only have one account on my laptop.

    And no, would I need to call Lenovo or Windows?

    You would call Microsoft at the toll free number provided in the activate by phone wizard.

    Also I don't have the option to activate by phone so how would I get the number? Can you get it for England for me?

    Here is a thread from an HP forum
    Windows 8.1 message 'your windows licence will expire soon' - HP Support Forum - 3774108

    They mention in there that they called MS and they said to call HP. You might want to start by contact Lenovo and asking them what is happening.

    To me, it sounds like they activated against a KMS server and now it's checking back in again and cannot find the KMS server to update its configuration.
