    Latest 8.1 64-bit Update Hoses 32-bit programs?

The latest 8.1 64-bit update - KB2919355 - is a cumulative update for 64 bit systems. It is nearly 1 Gb of data. After installing this update I began to notice that certain 32-bit programs would not start, producing error messages like this:
"The program is not completely installed, or it asked you to reboot, but you did not reboot. Or, the program is not installed in this user's space (or similar)."

I am not using Windows "apps". I have ClassicShell installed and use the desktop to navigate and run programs as administrator.

Previous to the update listed above, everything worked normally if you can call 8.1 normal. The problem was beyond my ability to track down. After a complete re-install I updated up to but not including the latest mega update above. Everything now works fine again. The information panel on the update takes you to a Microsoft web site explaining what is going on. One section of this informative page lists all known programs that no longer work after updating. Seriously?

Instructions with the update say that no further updating will be available without first installing KB22919355. Great! I did see a post last week posted here:
Numerous event id 10016 errors win 8 pro 64 bit

Is this post referring to my specific issue? Perhaps others have noticed a problem like this.

    Thanks!
    IW

The update is KB2919355. I've had it installed since 4/16 and haven't experienced the problems you describe. It did take three attempts before it succeeded with some other updates installed in between.

After looking closer at my update history I see it actually installed twice. Once on 4/11 and then again on 4/16. Strange. Maybe I applied a restore point around that time.

In any case, I've not experienced your problem.

Anyone else please confirm that problem OP described is coming up as I plans to install this update.

Since I now keep an image drive of my latest working installation, I will install it again and see if there are any further clues.
    Thank you,

No issues here either. There was an update to KB2919355 that was released with the exact same KB number, only it was a lot smaller. They patched the patch. I was running the leaked version so I got that same update 3 times.

I have HP Envy m6 1102tx and last time I upgraded to Windows 8.1, had to hunt around internet for Driver updates and solutions. Is there going to be problem with drivers after applying this update?

I had no issues after applying update 1. Just for clarification, the link I posted is just update 1, its not 8.1 with update 1.

    Update on original trouble

After re-installing Win 8.1 64-bit and leaving well enough alone, I was able to install the cumulative update (referenced above) without experiencing crashes and strange error messages. I am currently up to date and none of the more recent updates causes trouble with 32 bit programs, even the ones that are not officially supposed to work. Why wouldn't they? I doubt if the creators of lots of very useful programs will rush to roll out their 64 bit version. That is nuts.

My only guess about why the errors happened in the first place is the use of a registry cleaner (PowerTools). Up through XP this program was necessary to keep the O.S. alive and well. I'm not sure it will be necessary now. The files and registry entries that it lists are valid registry entries and not false links, so if you use PT, look carefully at what files it selects to delete! My second guess is that we have hard and symbolic links which did not exist in XP. Unless you know what you are doing and how to create/modify a link...leave it be.

As for the question about the HP printer drivers (how did that come up?) simply download the extra printer drivers when installing a new printer. The Envy series appears in the list.
