    Are you using GRUB boot loader or some other 3rd party boot loader?
    Thank you for your lead, my GRUB boot entry for windows missing a line which set boot flag for windows partition:

    Code:
    parttool (hd0,msdos3) boot+
    I added it, recreated the grub config file, reboot then the install worked (which failed before)!!!
    Hi, I am having the same problem as you, and I believe I have the same (or similar) setup. I have windows 8.1 as my primary and Ubuntu 14.04 installed. I was using the GRUB loader as well. Can you point me in the direction of what I need to do to fix the grub loader? My experience with linux is limited sadly.

    Any pointers (no matter how limited in scope) would be a great help and appreciated.

    [I will edit this post if I get it figured out in the mean time using google. I dont want to waste your time.]

    I'm on archlinux so maybe it's different for you:

    Here is file at /etc/grub.d/40_custom which manages Windows boot entry

    Code:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
    # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
    # the 'exec tail' line above.

    menuentry 'Windows 8' {
        insmod part_msdos
        insmod ntfs
        set root='hd0,msdos3'
        parttool (hd0,msdos3) boot+
        drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
        chainloader +1
    }
    Please note that msdos3 is the Windows partition, I don't have System Reserved partition. You may want to set that instead.

    You can try to edit/create that file and run command to update grub:

    Code:
    sudo update-grub2

    Thanks!
    replacing what my line had, for the below text worked great!
    "parttool (hd0,msdosX) boot+"

    Thanks for the help man.
