    Windows Update Error 80070011

Windows Update fails with Error 80070011. The explanation of this error is as follows:

ERROR_NOT_SAME_DEVICE - The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive.

Now I am wondering if anyone has managed to work around this problem to date? I see successful reports online; but none of these appear to be working successfully on the latest Windows 8.1 version.

If there's any guidance that could be provided, I'd really appreciate it!

I have seen that error before. Have you redirected any part of Windows to another volume, like user profiles perhaps?

I re-read the title that mentions "Directory Junction." What did you use a Junction to redirect? That is where your problem is coming from.

Yes, actually I redirected every folder to another volume, with the exception of the Windows folder itself. Is there no way to work around this problem otherwise?

I'm afraid not. One thing to consider is that by moving it to another volume you are actually duplicating much of the space taken, because nearly all of Windows is hard-linked from the Windows\winsxs store. Which is also why servicing fails, because hard-links do not work across volumes.

Actually since winsxs is inside Windows, and I've moved all of Windows, there is relatively little duplication going on (except only for files outside of the Windows folder).

Agreed. Most of the hard-links are within the Windows directory, but some are also between Winsxs and ProgramData, and Program Files, and Program Files (x86) and even Users. Those directories must be physically on the same volume as the Windows\Winsxs directory or the OS will be unserviceable. That does not, however block you from installing your applications to another volume, nor does it block you from putting personal files on another volume, it just cannot be done by redirecting the original folders.

So that's it, I'm out of luck with no magical workarounds?

None that I can think of. I'd remove the junctions and move the folders back. Uninstall any applications I wanted moved off of the windows volume, and re-install to another drive.
