Update to 8.1 just keeps downloading for hours - and dies.

I'm on W8 and want to update to 8.1 but I have tried three times with the same result.

In the store I start the download and it seems to start correctly (just like on two other laptops that I have updated successfully within the last week). However, nothing else happens. The screen says downloading and the thermometer crawls from left to right for a while, indicating that it is, in fact, doing something (I am on a 40/40 line).

After about 30 minutes or so the thermometer start from the left margin Again. No explanation as to why. Same story Again. It sometimes takes 15 minutes before it seems to start allover again, and sometimes considerably more, but the end result is the same: After hours on end it seems to die and nothing happens. The job list indicates that nothing is running.

And Windows 8 does not seem to be influenced by all this. It looks and feels the same.

Can anyone point me to a possible explanation?

I'll leave this to the experts but Jeff I believe he wants to go from 8 to 8.1, of course then he will have to do the 8.1 Update.

I'm sure you wont have to wait long for someone to help you zoega and Welcome to the Forum. :)

Perhaps one of the problems he is having is the fact that updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 now includes the troublesome Windows 8.1 update KB2919355 which is why I mentioned the problems people are having.

Prior to this recent "update" one would update to Windows 8.1 from the Store and then the Windows 8.1 Update was offered. Now everything is included in one update.

Yes, I am handling three laptops - my own, my wife's and my neighbour's. After moving the other two to 8.1 I just want my own to be in sync. However, I guess I can live with 8 for a while until somebody comes up with a solution.

I dont know how which updates I am dealing with. It just says "11 updates" in he upper right corner.

How can I find out which error codes I end up with? As mentioned above it just dies and tells me nothing. Is the error listed somewhere that I can find it?

Thanks for the welcome, Joan :)

There are literally thousands of posts about the problem with this update on the MS Community Forum. Unfortunately there does not appear to be one solution which works for everyone You can wade through the myriad "fixes", solutions, workarounds and suggestions posted there or wait until MS finds a fix. Recently the moderators of that forum have been urging people to open a support case as it appears MS still doesn't know what the problem is.
