Hi everybody.

I am sitting with a Windows 8.1 notebook that does not allow me to do Windows updates at all. I get an error message that NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal operation.

Does anybody know how to resolve such a problem? I do not want to reload the OS, but need to have this issue resolved asap.

Thanx

I managed to find the solution!! During a Windows update, the WUAUCLT.exe file was also updated. This updated .exe file corrupted in some or other way. I copied the WUAUCLT.exe from another machine onto a usb drive. I booted up with Hiren's Boot CD and replaced the file in the c:\Windows\system32 folder and the one in the folder called C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-w..wsupdateclient-core_31bf3856ad364e35_7.9.9600.17092_none_e5fe805708e7d973. This is where the update client is located when updated. After this was done, all is well again.
