Will 8.1 update 1 be an optional update?

I just successfully upgraded my mom's XP machine to Win 8.1 cause of Microsoft's end-of-support for the old OS. It took the best part of a day backing up her files, installing and activating and then setting up new software on the new OS. It's not something I'd want to do again in a hurry and I'm a little concerned about this new update which I've just heard about. All this business of upgrading and updating is time consuming and stressful to me! I've set her updates to the recommended automatic setting, so what I want to know is: Will the update hijack her machine and install itself without warning once it becomes available or will it be an optional one that we can initiate ourselves? I'd rather it'd be the latter to be honest. She works from her home on her PC so any surprise down time while the patch installs is not desirable. The original 8 to 8.1 update on my own PC , took ages with several reboots so I'm kind of apprehensive about this new one.

    Hello Nalydyenlo,

No worries. The "Windows 8.1 Update" will just be a Windows Update. You're not going to need to reinstall Windows.

Thanks for the quick reply, Brink. That's good to know. The 8 to 8.1 update was like a whole re-install whereas this one I guess will be more like a service pack that we can install at our leisure, am I right? It's just that when I saw posts about leaked ISOs etc., I thought it was going to be a major overhaul like the previous one and that I was going to have my work cut out. Phew!

I've had the 8.1 Update 1 RTM on both my pc's for almost 2 weeks now. Microsoft had the downloads on their site for about 2 hours and then pulled it. I got it on my desktop pc and notebook in time, as I saved the download. Both are running great. Also, just so you know, open the Windows Store and let it run the check for updates. Between Monday & today all Microsoft preinstalled app's got updates. Probably due to the fact that Build started today.

Nope, no major overhaul this time thank goodness.

It's more of a feature pack than service pack, but yeah it's the same procedure.

I wouldn't waste my time with any questionable leaks when the official "Windows 8.1 Update" will be released on the 8th of this month..

Since your Mom's PC is set for Automatic Updates it will install them when they come out on April 8. You may want to set it to Let me Choose option so you can do them when you are ready.

Damn, I was hoping 'twas going to be an optional update like win 7 service pack 1. I don't like the thought of my mom going to work on her newly re-vamped pc only to have it paralyzed for an hour or more while the update installs automatically. If you're right, I'd want to call over in the mean time and set her updates to the 'let me choose....' setting so I can oversee it's installation and ensure it goes smoothly. I feel kinda responsible for her PC maintenance now since it was me who put the new OS there.

I'm gonna take his word on this. If it's like a service pack then it'll be optional. So, no panic.

As Justin Wilson said. I am a Safety man, I wear a belt and suspenders. I always have mine set to Let me Choose.

For the average PC user Update 1 will come via Windows update. As Brink mentioned its more of a feature pack. If your an IT Pro for a big organization though you'll want more than that. That's why Microsoft released updated ISO's on TechNet and MSDN. It lets the IT guy do a clean install with update one already included. There is also a stand alone update only download available on TechNet and MSDN. Some members have TechNet and MSDN subscriptions and have already downloaded the update and the new ISO. That's why some are talking about ISO's, a lot of people want them but not everybody can get them. Not easily anyway.
